A nope from me too. We close the curtains, switch off the TV and sit in the dark all night. We don't mind the really young children who come round with their parents early on in the evening, but when the older more thuggish lot start knocking at the doors, most of them not even dressed up and still demanding a 'treat' we ignore them.

Yes, and taking my darlings out trick or treating too. Good idea about the note. That's what folk do round here too. We only knock on the doors which we know the children will be welcome at - not fair on people to knock randomly at their doors. Daisy

Yes, we always have a few sweets/cakes left over from my youngest daughters birthday on 28th. Along our road those wanting to join in put decorations in their windows - the local children know that a dark house means dont call. The local police also give out posters and stickers for your front door and windows if you dont want to be bothered. We enjoy seeing the lovely costumes some of the children make/wear - i always think Trick or Treat in our area is a community occassion, part of living in a village i suppose. Elaine x.

Years ago when I was much younger a friend took us trick or treating on the US airbase at Mildenhall in Suffolk. The deal was quite simple - all the houses who had their porch lights on would accept trick-or-treaters, and those whose front light was in darkness were to be left well alone. We could do with adopting a system like that here!

No not after last year. I had a large bowl of chocolate sweets and I told them they could have a couple each and the little pigs grabbed handfuls and ran off. This year I am unplugging the door bell and putting our large black dog in the porch. I don't like hallowen anyway. Jo.

No, and I really like Mikes idea - except we don't have a porch light.

NO. The wheelie bin is across the front gate as it is collected in the morning and the bolt is on the gate. Maureen

Michael that's exactly what happens here in my village. We have decorations in the window and pumpkins on the doorstep and any houses which don't are left alone. Daisy

I have bought a bag of sweets, but once those have gone I shall put up my sticker which says no trick or treaters, which I picked up in town this afternoon. Its not that I am a killjoy, but it does get beyond a joke down our road, I don't mind the little kids, but later in the evening the teenagers are usually out in force, thats when I get annoyed. Sue

Definitely not I spend most of my evenings in the back of the house anyway, so will just turn off front lights & take batteries out of door bell. Vivienne

No, as i have said before on another thread i do not believe in this form of begging! i never expected neighbours to give my children 'handouts' so i'm certainly not giving theirs!

I agree it depends largely on where you live. It's a lot different in smaller villages where everyone knows everyone else than in larger towns. I'd never go out knocking on random doors if I didn't know who lived there or that they didn't have a pumpkin in the window or something. I also agree that Halloween round our way at least has been hijacked by teenagers who use it as an excuse to demand money, not sweets. Frankly, they should be grateful for even that.
