Last year the police were called to a shop in Ledbury Herefordshire, about 10 miles from where I live, to remove all the Gollywogs that were in the shop window because someone from the PC brigade objected to them. That made headline news in the papers and TV!!! It was hilarious in the days that followed as everyone was going around with gollies tied to their cars and putting them in their house windows. It was surprising too how many folk unearthed their Robinsons Golly badges to wear. We even had one old dear come for respite where I work with one tied to her walking frame LOL Daphne

I can remember as a child being read the story of Epaminandos. I recognise that in this day and age the stereotypes in it would be deemed at totally inappropriate. However, as a child I certainly do not remember any racist undercurrents. The story showed what happens if a child takes everything that an adult says literally. The story was morallistic and more about communication than racism. I loved it as a child and feel that it taught me to LISTEN rather than to be racist. Anyone else remember it 'Epaminandos - you aint got the sense you was born with!'

Agree it's stupid BUT seemingly the dolls are allowed IF they are called Gollies it is the word Gollywog which has been banned by the PC Police. T.O.R. ;o))

Oh Ginny Epaminandos was my favourite of all times. I can still picture the book. I looked round for one of the books on the net but was way out of my reach. I got my 2 grandchildren Golly Wogs infact that is the first thing I went to buy when the first was on his way and last Christmas the little girl got one. A child really must have one just as much as a bear. When I was little they had a toy stall in our local market and the biggest Golly Wog you ever saw I just used to go and stand and stare at him.
