Little Lost Report 16 Mar 2007 12:37

same thing happened about a year ago. My kids had jumpers knitted by my mum wiht the robinsons golly on them. The story about the three little pigs is so ridiculous as it is a play at a church of england school and they dont want to upset the muslims. PC gone over the top.

When I was little I had a 'white' doll with blonde hair and blue eyes and a gollywog, I loved them both equally....could this be why I am not rascist?! PS I loved my teddy and my toy rabbit and donkey too ....is this why I'm vegetarian! Rose xx

Anyway, why do people of foreign nationalities get upset with my Flag. It is a St Georges Cross with a picture of St. Georgs killing the dragon in the middle. The wording says BRITISH BY BIRTH and underneath ENGLISH BY THE GRACE OF GOD. Now what on earth is wrong with that. If it said Scotland forever on the cross of St Andrew would they still complain

At least good sense prevailed - from the BBC wrbsite - 'Lancashire Police confirmed a member of the public had made a complaint but no action would be taken. A spokesperson said: 'No offences have been committed and it is no longer a police matter.' Gwynne

Why then is it so difficult to buy a black doll? Do not know about more recent times but certainly in the period of 18-20 years ago - was in Carribean and two parts of Africa - all in November time and shops were decorated for Christmas - not one black doll. About 17 years ago had friends searching - g.dau wanted a black doll - we did eventually get one - quite by chance in Lubeck, Germany.

The lady in the shop where l live said she was told that the word Gollywog comes from Holland, it had something to do with the children sent up the chimneys, when they came back down were all black and its means Oriental person or gentleman - so why all the agro etc jude sarf wales :o) x

Winter

Winter Report 16 Mar 2007 14:21

I googled the following: Golliwog' was World War II British naval slang for a Gauloise cigarette, which had tobacco which was nearly black in colour. The American rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival was known as 'The Golliwogs' and under this name they released a number of singles on the Fantasy label before they rose to prominence. Golliwog is also a Slovenian punkrock/hardcore band. In unofficial Military Parlance, less so nowadays for Political Correctness, the term was used to indicate a piece of equipment that has been tuned, upgraded, and possibly customised to the point where it is no longer similar to the stock item it started as. The term stems from the fact that the Goliwog was black, ie. largely monotone, or featureless in a sense,(standard, as it were) but was always represented as decorated smartly with ribbons and bows, etc, which is to say, dressed up in finery. (No Golliwog was ever seen dressed conservatively). In Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy has the title character consider one of his Special Force Snipers, and his 'Golliwog Walther Rifle'. Both man and weapon are fine-tuned to the Nth degree. The sixth movement of Claude Debussy's Children's Corner is titled 'Golliwogg's Cakewalk', inspired by the American dance. A Golliwog doll was used in the BBC/HBO show Extras when one of the characters (a white girl) finds herself in the awkward sitaution of her new boyfriend (a black man) seeing it. Aileen xxx

I bought the book Little Black Sambo from a bookshop in Marlborough, Wilts only about 5 years ago, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it, but had to buy it to prove to my grandchildren that there was such a story. They love it. The story is really about how clever the little boy was and how stupid the tigers were. Liz

Karen in the desert Report 16 Mar 2007 15:43

I'll say the word Golliwog, and sing the rhymes baa baa black sheep and 3 little pigs...and I will ask for black shoe polish if I want it. Nobody is going to tell me what I can't say unless their point is valid and reasonable. In my opinion there is no reasonable explanation for banning the above words/songs etc . This place has gone bananas...or are we not allowed to say that anymore because they're yellow??!! Karen (member of the BRING BACK THE GOLLIWOG campaign). P.S. When I'm in certain parts of the Middle East I dress conservatively and in Saudi I wear the abbaya (black cloak). I respect and understand that it's all part of their culture going back hundreds of years.....not some whim suddenly thought up. I wouldn't expect them to bend the rules JUST because I don't like it. I respect their culture...'when in Rome' and all that. Besides, if I didn't cover up in Saudi I'd get sent home - simple as that. So it's up to me, to like it or lump it.
