I did something today that was really terrible and stupid. It was driving related and I am now going to get three points on my licence and a probable ?60 fine. I have been driving for 36 years with a clean licence so far.I consider myself a careful driver and never go over the speed limit. It was a split second loss of concentraction and I feel so bad about it.(Nobody was hurt by the way)

I feel so bad and just keep thinking what 'might' have happened.
Sorry but just had to get it of my chest so to speak.
I am not looking for sympathy, just thought it might make me feel a bit better writing it down.

Ann, its a horrible thing to happen but could happen to any of us who drive.

Going over what "might of happened" will just make you feel worse in the long run.

My husband keeps telling me 'its done, nobody was hurt, now forget about it'
Perhaps I'll feel better sleeping on it.(hopefully)

If you get caught speeding once in 36 years you are not doing too bad.

I get done once every thirty years. First time in 1978 and again in 2008.

First time I was a van driver and was caught racing at 85, second time I had mellowed a bit and was caught doing 33.

No point in thinking about what could have happened Ann - because it didn't. It's not the worse driving offence and a lot of us have suffered from a loss of concentration at some time. Try not to let it upset you too much.

I agree with Suemaid no point in thinking what could of happen luckily it didnt, and I suspect you'll learn from your experience today...I dont fully understand what you did???

Speeding ? Answering your phone? drove up a 1 way street the wrong way? Parked in the Mayors parking space ? Did wheelies outside a primary school?

Oh Ann, i understand where you are coming from with the "What could have happened"..........but, it didn't, so don't go beating yourself up about it........cos it didn't happen.

Easier said that done i know..........xxx

It seems that we who passed our test in a horse and cart make as many mistakes as young lads. It is just that we have the experience to rectify the situation.

After thirty-six years you would have the experience to deal with almost anything that happened as a result of your little lapse.

Ann

You've been driving for 36 years with a clean licence. Not many can say that and I certainly can't. One lapse of concentration is pretty good going I think and as you say no one got hurt. Try not to let it bother you too much,

My dad got his first 3 points a couple of months ago aged 75 and driving for 47 years :-(
He was turning left at some traffic lights following a big white van and could not see that the lights had changed to red. He was only a second over but it was enough.
I have had two lots of speeding points once on the M11 through road works at midnight so no slow moving traffic infront and the second time I agreed to do someone a favour and give them a lift into Brighton and got done on the seafront, each time it was only about 5 miles over the limit

Ann

At the moment you are feeling angry with yourself for losing something precious to you. This will pass. What you should now concentrate on is being thankful it wasnt worse.

Look for the good and don't dwell on that which cannot be changed.

Its no good saying its ok because something didnt happen,,,,,it did,,,,,, she broke the road traffic law and no excuses says otherwise ,,,,,,,,,its caused no harm to anyone but you.....its one of lifes valueable lesson.

Pity some louts dont feel like you in that you know it will never hopefully happen again,,,,others are just repeat offenders,,,... .

dont beat yourself up,,,,pay the fine and move on........beep beep. ;-)

Did you get the option of a driver awareness day?

I did and really enjoyed the experience. Should like to go on one again but won't be trying to get one especially.

AnnCardiff Report 7 Feb 2012 09:21

same thing happened to me - 74 years old, driving for over 40 years and got caught by a camera I knew well, on a suburban road by the way, I was doing 37 mph apparently. I got offered the chance to go on a driver improvement course and thereby avoid the points and the fine so I took that option. The course cost around £80, so financially I was no better off, but the points would have increased my insurance I imagine, so all's well that ends well
