Buried with full military honours ( for services to the British Empire) 12/8/2011.

What was irony?

The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; a statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea.

Three kinds of irony are commonly recognized:

1.Verbal irony is a trope in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning that the words appear to express.

2.Situational irony involves an incongruity between what is expected or intended and what actually occurs.

3.Dramatic irony is an effect produced by a narrative in which the audience knows more about present or future circumstances than a character in the story.

Irony will be mourned by all those with the wit to have recognised its place in educated society.

No flowers by request.

Isnt' that a generalisation? :-D

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Aug 2011 10:08

It's always a mistake to generalise Teresa .. but in this case I fear that reports of irony's death have NOT been exaggerated ;-)

I should be delighted to be proved wrong though :-D

i am sorry but I don't understand what this thread is alluding to.

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Aug 2011 11:32

Sharron, it's one of those where you 'had to be there' the night before lol...

I had posted a tongue in cheek 'Ironic' thread yesterday on 'generalisations'... it was reported and has been deleted by GR, I assume the reporter did not understand the comments thereon were ironic and not 'literal'.

For example , one of the few posts on it that was NOT reported ( strangely!) was "All Irish drink a lot"....plainly NOT true, but one of those 'generalisations' some people use to categorise a group rather than see them as individuals.

Oh Rose.
If only I had a pound for every time I´ve got myself into deep s**t for using irony.
I got it from my Dad only in his day people called it a "dry sense of humour" & laughed. No one took it seriously.
Unfortunately, the Spanish don´t understand irony & can get deeply offended by it.

Sharron

Sharron Report 12 Aug 2011 12:13

Gotcha.

It is a very Eglish trait I believe.

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Aug 2011 12:21

WiseChild,Sharron yes I think irony goes down better in some countries than others lol. I have found that myself, even with areas of the UK :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 12 Aug 2011 12:23

You have to be a bit intelligent to understand it too!

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Aug 2011 12:25

well maybe it is easier to grasp when it's spoken rather than written? Tone of voice might identify it more to those not used to it :-D

Latin is supposed to be a dead language , I still use the odd phrase here and there ( even though I never learned any Latin at school , having only gone to a secondary modern .......lol ) , SO , I shall continue to use Irony as well :-D

Isn't there a song with the title " Isn't it Ironic " ?

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

Discuss Rose? ;-) :-D
