Hi Norma

You are very welcome

I just put in the search boxes

Ethel (no Surname)

1907 +/- 1 year

born Wigan

and when the results came up I just looked for a name that could have been mistranscribed--and there she was bless her.

Hope this helps

One of the problems with trying to search on GR census is that you can't search with just a Christian name.

Hi Norma,

If you search for your mother on the 1911 as Leddon you will see when looking at the household it states the years married and children born alive.

Hi Sylvia

Thanks for your honest advice. I had been wondering how long I could finance my self. As I have said before the govt. may attack my NHS pension and then I could be 'snookered'.
So grateful

Hi brilliant Barbara

Grandmothers maiden name was Goulding.
Yes grandfather was a joiner but later worked for a brewery ( clerk & journeyman) and had a pub The Rising SUN where many family members lived, to my regret I didn't know either of them, mother being last in line.
Marvellous effort on your part. It is clear to me that I wouldn't have got far without all the help I have got here.
Many thanks.

Hi Barbara
Today I seached the 1901 & 1911 Censuses once more at GR to find the info you found without success.
Does this mean you got the info. from another source. It's getting under my skin that I can't find the details myself. I want to find out about the children who died.
I now have my mother's siblings in the correct order and it's great.
Cheers
Norma
PS just been over to Freebmd
and didn't find it user friendly after quite some time modifying search clicking on results brought me Ancestory .Uk sso I gave up but did notice prices cheaper than GR

Hi Norma

I use Ancestry---Find My Past--and FreeBMD (and others but mostly these) I don't use GR for Census etc. only to "Search Trees"

Please can I ask what certificates you have , Norma ?
Something isn't quite adding up right !!!!!

You say your Mums, mothers maiden name is Goulding---and yes I can see John and Elizabeths marriage index

HOWEVER the Elizabeth I found on 1901 census (with the TOPPING family) turns out on earlier census to be THEIR DAUGHTER !!! (Edward and Mary Topping) But I can't find a marriage index for Mary and Edward to see if Mary had Elizabeth before she married Edward.

I was hoping to find she was Mary Goulding !!!!

There are birth indexes for both Elizabeth Topping AND Elizabeth Goulding born Wigan

Births Jun 1864

TOPPING Elizabeth
Wigan 8c 27
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Births Dec 1863

GOULDING Elizabeth
Wigan 8c 52

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1864

GOULDING Elizabeth Ellen
Wigan 8c 74

Do you know for certain that the children on 1911 census I posted are your Aunts and Uncles ? Have I got the right census for your Mum ? If your not sure I have the right one
I will look again and again --I want to help you find the right family.

Best wishes

Hi Norma,

Your family are on GR census but in 1911 Ethel is down as Leddon, so if you search under that name you will find her.

This is from a search.

1911 census

Leddon Ethel 1908 Wigan Lancashire Wigan

In 1901 Elizabeth is down under her correct name not as Barbara found her on Findmypast.

1901 census

Seddon Elizabeth 1864 Lancs Wigan Lancashire, Wigan

Just enter the names and birth years and Wigan as Keyword.

You may find theses sites very useful.

On the first one I found the marriage of John and elizabeth.

Marriage: 31 Mar 1883 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
John Seddon - 21 Joiner Bachelor of Hallgate
Elizabeth Goulding - 19 Spinster of Hallgate
Groom's Father: James Seddon, Joiner
Bride's Father: Edward Goulding, Collier
Witness: James Hill; Jane Goulding
Married by Banns by: Charles J.Buckmaster Curate
Register: Marriages 1880 - 1888, Page 104, Entry 208
Source: LDS Film 1885699

Also possible marriage of Elizabeth's parents.

Marriage: 20 Oct 1861 St George, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Edward Goulding - 21 Collier Bachelor of School Lane
Mary Cotter - (X), 23 Spinster of School Lane
Witness: James Perry; Mary Peel, (X)
Married by Banns by: Alex Smith, Incumbent
Register: Marriages 1861 - 1867, Page 31, Entry 62
Source: LDS Film 1885726

I need to do a bit more investigating regarding what you said Barbara about thinking Elizabeth was the daughter of the Toppings who she was with in 1901 as there's also a Cotter with them and Edward Golding's wife was named Cotter.

It may be tomorrow before I can get back to this.

Christine

Christine you are a Marvel ----

I have been looking most of the night and all today for this conection ---Maybe Mary didn't marry Edward Topping
he was 5 years younger but I do believe this is the right one you have put for Mary ---and Elizabeth Cotter was with Mary on 1911 census too.

Thank you so much

I've just been having a quick look at previous years and I can't find Edward Topping before 1871 but can find Edward Goulding, need to spend more time on this though as I'm confusing myself.

By the way Barbara, I'm also from Yorkshire, Huddersfield.

Of course, Maybe a name change ??

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 11 Jul 2010 20:44

That's what I was wondering as Edward Topping states born Standish and Edward Goulding born Shevington, only 2 miles apart.

The only thing is there's an Elizabeth Goulding with her grandparents, Catherine and James I think in 1871 and 1881 but she's also with the Toppings!!

Will have to leave this for now but it's intriguing isn't it?

I think GR is playing up a bit---this is the 3rd time I have tried to reply and nothing has come up !!!

I think that Elizabeth Topping / Goulding may be the same person. Booked down on the census in both homes. not unheard of.

Catch you soon
