At last I found it yet strangely my cousin (2nd really) doesn't recall her mother ever mentioning any of them and was a great source of family information she only died 3 years ago. So not still births, but without forenames not much point in looking in births.
Thanks
Norma

Hi Norma

If you would like to "click" on my name and send me your e-mail address (not so it goes on the board though, but through a "Private Message". ) I have downloaded the 1911 census page for your Mum and family-- So will send it to you --can't do this through GR so has to be through your own e-mail.

best wishes

Hi again Norma,

I have posted these details before but you must have missed them.

Your family are on GR census but in 1911 Ethel is down as Leddon, so if you search under that name you will find her.

This is from a search.

1911 census on GR

<<<Leddon Ethel 1908 Wigan Lancashire Wigan

In 1901 Elizabeth is down under her correct name and not as Barbara found her on Findmypast.

1901 census on GR

<<<Seddon Elizabeth 1864 Lancs Wigan Lancashire, Wigan

Just enter the names and birth years and Wigan as Keyword.

However on GR you will not be able to get a copy of the image for 1911, they only have the transcription and then copies of the Enumerators Book for the street.

Hi Norma

I think I have said before "I use Ancestry---Find My Past--and FreeBMD (and others but mostly these) I don't use GR for Census etc. only to "Search Trees"

What Christine and I are wondering is that maybe Edward Goulding at some point changed his name to Topping ??

Please let us know when you get Elizabeths marriage cert.

Very best wishes
Barbara xx

EDIT You don't need the marriage cert Norma, Christine found all the details from the cert !!

Can I join in.? There is definitely a link with my Seddon family. My cousin says yes but not sure how. I remember one member JoeTopping, an insurance agent, bowler hat and cauliflower ears.
Also have 2 old sepia photos(different people) of women, on the back is written ? Topping ladies.
Also my grandmother was Elizabeth Goulding and I plan to order her marriage certs. Have al ready got death certs.
Thanks

My family are from Shevington area, in fact one of my ancestors was indeed a Topping born way back but I don't know any more Toppings in her family.

On a connecting branch I've also got Aspinalls in my tree including some called Moses (not this one as mine wasn't born until later) so I think there could be a connection further back in the tree to that record. However, I'm stuck about 1810.

I think GR is playing up a bit---this is the 3rd time I have tried to reply and nothing has come up !!!

I think that Elizabeth Topping / Goulding may be the same person. Booked down on the census in both homes. not unheard of.

Catch you soon

(Sorry forgot to say I'm in between Doncaster and Rotherham )

ChristineinPortugal Report 11 Jul 2010 20:44

That's what I was wondering as Edward Topping states born Standish and Edward Goulding born Shevington, only 2 miles apart.

The only thing is there's an Elizabeth Goulding with her grandparents, Catherine and James I think in 1871 and 1881 but she's also with the Toppings!!

Will have to leave this for now but it's intriguing isn't it?

ChristineinPortugal Report 11 Jul 2010 20:31

I've just been having a quick look at previous years and I can't find Edward Topping before 1871 but can find Edward Goulding, need to spend more time on this though as I'm confusing myself.

By the way Barbara, I'm also from Yorkshire, Huddersfield.

Christine you are a Marvel ----

I have been looking most of the night and all today for this conection ---Maybe Mary didn't marry Edward Topping
he was 5 years younger but I do believe this is the right one you have put for Mary ---and Elizabeth Cotter was with Mary on 1911 census too.

Thank you so much

Hi Norma,

Your family are on GR census but in 1911 Ethel is down as Leddon, so if you search under that name you will find her.

This is from a search.

1911 census

Leddon Ethel 1908 Wigan Lancashire Wigan

In 1901 Elizabeth is down under her correct name not as Barbara found her on Findmypast.

1901 census

Seddon Elizabeth 1864 Lancs Wigan Lancashire, Wigan

Just enter the names and birth years and Wigan as Keyword.

You may find theses sites very useful.

On the first one I found the marriage of John and elizabeth.

Marriage: 31 Mar 1883 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
John Seddon - 21 Joiner Bachelor of Hallgate
Elizabeth Goulding - 19 Spinster of Hallgate
Groom's Father: James Seddon, Joiner

Also possible marriage of Elizabeth's parents.

Marriage: 20 Oct 1861 St George, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Edward Goulding - 21 Collier Bachelor of School Lane
Mary Cotter - (X), 23 Spinster of School Lane
Witness: James Perry; Mary Peel, (X)
Married by Banns by: Alex Smith, Incumbent
Register: Marriages 1861 - 1867, Page 31, Entry 62

I need to do a bit more investigating regarding what you said Barbara about thinking Elizabeth was the daughter of the Toppings who she was with in 1901 as there's also a Cotter with them and Edward Golding's wife was named Cotter.

It may be tomorrow before I can get back to this.
