My father is terminally ill with cancer.

we had a family meeting yesterday and found out he has no life insurence.

my question is what is cheaper cremation or burial.

he does mind either way as long as he has a head stone.

I would suggest ring a couple of funeral directors, put the situation to them and see what they can come up with.

Sorry to hear about your father.

Cremation is considerably cheaper but it will then depend on the size and location of the memorial you wish to have.

Best to check it out as Brian suggests

my dad lives 200 miles away from me.

i know it sounds silly but ringing a funeral director makes it sound so final.

But i know i will have to.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

My Dad was cremated in April, down in Cheshire
Basic coffin...£400 which looked really nice,he wore his own clothes with heather on his buttonhole.
We had one family car, plus he was in the chapel of rest for anyone who wanted to see him..this was £300 alone for that.
We had CD's as to an organist.

Total bill for undertakers was £2040.Then you have to buy death certs etc.
His local pub put on food for us.

So sorry to hear your very sad news. My dad passed away in 2004 and there wasn't a much difference in the price, and you can get a memorial stone at possibly a later date for your dad. My dad wanted to be buried as have amost of my late relatives, I miss him so much, but I personally find it a comfort to visit his grave,i know you don't live near, but I find it a comfort that he's still on this earth so to speak. Cremation seems so final, but it really is a personal thing.
My thoughts are with you and your dear dad.xxx.

So very sorry to hear your sad news................I also lost my Dad in 2004, he had a church service, cremation then his ashes were interred in our local churchyard.

I think we all need to think about these things..............I remember vividly after seeing my Dad shortly after his death turning to the consultant and asking "what do I do now?"

I had no idea what needed to be done and in what order, I had never had to deal with a death and funeral etc before.

I hope the time you have left with your Dad is as loving and fulfilling as possible.

Hi Kitty,

this will be my first funeral to organise.

I never it involved so much work.

You never think about your parents dying.

My mum has already paid for hers got her music sorted and everything.

When my dad died a few years ago a friend of my mum's who works at a funeral directors advised us to contact our local social services as we couldnt afford to spend a huge amount...plus he would have come back and haunted us if we had!
We found that social services have funeral directors that drastically reduce the amount having to be paid!
The whole funeral...cremation, one main car and preacher cost little under £2000! Alot less than other funeral directors!

Funeral directors will guide you through the sad time, they did with me, it was the irst funeral that myself and immediate family had to arrange.

I heard or read somewhere a saying, grief is the price you pay for having loved someone. You always have memories.

take care.xxx.

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 6 Oct 2008 13:27

Who ever organises it..gets the bill.
As far as I know you can also apply for help with it.Might be worth asking about it.

My Dad left some money but we had to add to it.
We wouln't have qualified for any help with it.
