Theresa (Cork, Ireland) 157164 Report 15 Apr 2008 20:11

Anyone, anyone out there who might be able to help??

The laptop wont go online. I have tried to do a system resore but it wont work keeps telling me 'system restore di not completw successfully...............' I have tried different restore points but it wont do it.

I cannot connect the lappy to the internet. Its running on Vista. It says connection not working but when I try to diagnose the problem it wont let me run the Network Diagnostic 'because the diagnostic policy service is not running'.

I am going to go demented as the kids and I all have research/work to do and I was getting more time on the desktop when the 2 eldest bought their own lappys now I am back to fighting for time...

Any ideas gratefully accepted.

love Theresa

Don't keep trying System Restore - it is not the cure all that everyone seems to think it is.
Are you using wifi?

What make and model (full model number, if possible) is your laptop?
Same question for your wireless router.
Who is your ISP?

One thing BT told me to do when I had problems, was to wire the laptop into the router. This will determine if it is a problem with your wireless adaptor or not. If you can connect with it wired, then the adaptor is the problem.

What to do about it is the next question and I don't know the answer, mine was ok

It is quite possible that you have inadvertently turned wan (wireless area network) off on your laptop.

Is the blue wireless button lit up - I think it is near the front of the keyboard or possibly on the front edge

eRRolSheep Report 15 Apr 2008 20:37

eRRolSheep Report 15 Apr 2008 20:38

Turn wireless off by pressing the wireless button which again I think is located on the front edge

Have you run the diagnostics on the internet icon in the taskbar? (the two little computers) If you right click on it, you shoudl see a menu, click on diagnose and repair.

With the blue wifi light on you could also try the following:

Click on Start > Connect To > Wireless Network Connection.
Highlight the network name you use in the available wireless networks list.
If you are using WEP encryption then remove the tick for Enable IEEE 802.11x authentication for this network and type the WEP encryption key in the Network key field.
Retype the encryption key in the Confirm network key field and then click on Connect.

OK switched on light up and a box came up with

HP Wireless Assistant
WLAN: on

Hovering over the icon it says

Connection status unknown
The dependency service or group failed to start

Right click gives me a box with

Connect to network
Turn off activity animation
Turn off notification of new networks
Diagnose and repair
Network and sharing centre
