We have lost our post office and the local garage - which was the local shop.

We are about 200 homes and I have lived here about 10 years.

Apparently 20 yrs ago there were 5 shops in this village, but I think Tesco has killed this.

Mac I was not haveing ago at all people that move to the country .I myself was town breed .My point was that some and far to many that move in do not fit in they try to bend the communitee to what they want, instead of embracing the life as you and your OH obviously did.

Yes Mac I agree 100% !

I too get involved with the local village and love the local way of life...wouldnt change a thing about it either.
ok Im not keen on the smell of slurry but then the local Devon villagers complain about it not me!!!
I'd never dream of complaining about the country way of life. If I didnt like it I'd have never moved here in the first place and can't understand people who do.

When I live in a seaside city area I remember the Co-op selling off one of their houses situated at the back of the store...within weeks the new tenants complained to the council about the early milk deliveries and after a few months and a court case the shop was told it couldnt have the deliveries until the afternoon !
and in High Wycombe where the famous furniture factory Ercols traded for donkey's years....that closed down due to new tenants complaining about the smell of smoke from the wood burners.

Daft as it sounds people dont always check out what they are letting themselves in for before they move.

They are supposed to be putting through a law to protect gardens as it is a loophole and gardens and knocking down dwellings is regarded a using a brownfield site! To me a brownfield site is ex industrial or when houses are no longer viable and require rebuilding as against refurbishing.

Know of a garage and repair shop in a village - a small development was built next door and one day one of the owners appeared and introduced himself to the garage owner and whilst chatting said I believe you are selling up and will be gone by next year. Garage owner was bemused and said 'don't know where you got your info but I am here to stay - I am third generation and the fifth is following on'! We reckon it was the estate agents!

We used to have a shop that sold everything in our village but it closed years ago. Our little post office now has a small shop and it's great for basics. Fortunately it isn't due to close but we were worried until recently.

We have a mobile library every three weeks and once a week a vegetable van comes round.

Our house was built in the 1960s and I expect the locals weren't impressed then but 20 or 30 years ago everyone seemed to get on well and join in everything which was going on.

We used to back onto fields but 15 executive 5 bedroomed homes were built there. It seems to me that the recent incomers just use this village as somewhere to sleep. They don't get involved in the village activities much.
