Well, they sound like a vile bunch of bigots! You don't deserve any remarks like those made about you.

Easy for me to say ignore them but in truth I probably couldn't and would open my big mouth. However that would be lowering yourself to their level. Although I would say to them that you all as a family have pride in your heritage and rightly so.

Late FIL was one of twenty children born, all gypsies.
People tend to judge by what they see on the TV and usually it's only misfits who are trying to 'adopt' a certain way of life. This colours peoples' opinions in the wrong way.

You stay proud and encourage your daughter to treasure her identity.

Romany, That woman isn't scratching her head because of nits - she's trying to wake up her brain cell LOL

Deanna Report 15 Nov 2007 18:17

There you are, your little girl already has a wonderful story to tell her class about her ancestors.

Her GGG.Grandad bought a cinema for the village!! lovely story that.

And as for NITS..... when a child gets nits.. they run amok in the class room, and a royal visitor could go home with an *unwelcome guest*.......

Don't even waste your energy worrying about her!

I havent even told my husband, Im just worrying about having to go to that school. Most of the family who all pile into the playground haven't even got kids of school age, so I dont know why they accompany their sister to the school. Its a tiny playground, so its so uncomfortable standing there while they're all staring at me. My daughter isnt allowed out unless an adult is there to collect her so Ive no choice but to go.

Hiya R., I haven't read further than page 1 of the thread. What did strike me immediately was - have any of this family got any brain cells?
Better not ask them that though, they may not know what you're talking about!
Take care.

Rosalind in Madeira Report 15 Nov 2007 19:53

It's one of these horrible things that people have to be labelled. If you are a gypsy you must be a thief, if you are a redhead you must be hot tempered. No it isn't like that, we are all individual.

And no it is not just women, we have a small problem with a man here who is Scottish, his nephew has accused (but not to our faces) my OH of insulting his nephew, all to do with them being Scottish, but we are not sure. We have just been told second hand from a friend who says we can't say anything and it is all because we have to be careful what we say to the people from Scotland as they are very sensitive. We are talking about grown men here. It has become a case of we are trying to take their friends away from them. It is worse than being in the school playground.

You have to rise above it, I don't know how Romany, as I am having a hard job trying to.

I am told, being very friendly and polite has a tendency to throw them as they are not expecting it.

Keep smiling.

I suspect they are so ignorant that they know nothing about the Romany way of life and are confusing Romanies with Irish 'didicoys' and travellers who have a bad press.

Maybe a word with the teacher asking her to explain the difference and to talk about the Romany way of life, the colourful caravans etc.

I wonder also if these women realise that they are being racist and could be in trouble with the law.

Hi RS.
Hold your head up high and forget the 'one cell'.

You have a beautiful family and deserve to be proud of them and your heritage without being intimidated.

All the very best to you.

Aw thanks everyone. Never knew you had Romany roots too Chris! Dreading tomorrow and having to do the school run, but I might ask the school if Sharna can come home on her own (no roads to cross). I probably take it too personally, but the main woman concerned is such a hard faced cow, a really nasty piece of work. Trust me to be the one she takes a dislike to!!

narrow minded bigots thats wha t they are romany

howie my dad came here tonight and was so pleased hed found out more info for you about your relis,
on the note of the bigots in your street, bout time you gave um taste of their own medicine, laugh at them,
my son has been bullied in school for being English in a school thats in Wales, i might add only just in wales mind you,
if they dared, my hubby phoned the school and asked what they were gona do cos after all did they have policy on racism, they said oh yes mr? we take very stern view of that,
he said well you better sort out why my sons being called an English bas***d and being draged down bank by his ankle, becos England beat Wales in rugby, can you believe the pettyness of it, flippin rugby they use to bully someone,
the teacher said well this isnt really racial is it,
we had to point out yes its welsh against english ,
(im welsh daughters born in wales, son born in england and proud of it)
needless to say they did deal with it, but only after we made fuss,
they didnt liek it either when our son started sticking up for himself,
im so embarrased to be welsh i tell you,
hope your daughters ok, and hold your head up romany be proud as is my boy of his heritage

There will sadly always be bigots with no brain and bullies with no soul.....be proud of your heritage, whatever it happens to be.

People who are perceived to be 'different' in some way will always be singled out, more especially perhaps in small villages etc...where every one knows every one elses business (or think they do
anyway). I know full well that I am considere to be a bit 'odd' in the village where i live...and thank God i am!

I didnt know Howie is your dad Julie Ann! He was so helpful, I cant thank him enough. Hope the situation with your son is now sorted, God it makes me so angry the way some kids bully the nice kids. Schools say they have a strong policy against bullying, but often you can't actually see it in force!
Hiya Rose, odd is special, lol :-)

i dont believe these schools whenthey say they have policy, its pants
yeh my sons growed up now romany, hes 16 and the lad that bullied him is fine, mind you it took steps of one day my son being jabed in the shoulder during lesson and finally standing up and pushing the lad concerned who bumped his eye,
nasty nasty graze on his cheek bone, Ha,
i then had to tell the teacher how it happend cos they dont give the victim(my son) chance to explain as they could only see the result,
he dont get picked on now, but then he is more out going now than he was,

yep howie is my dad, he loved looking for that info has done more today , hes always been fascinated by the romany way of life too, would love an olld old gypsy caravan himself

Hi R.S :):):)

Sorry to hear you are having these sort of problems. People can be so cruel. You certainly do not deserve this to happen to you and your family.

I also believe that this family are probably jelaous of what you are achieving. They certainly dont seem very intelligent to me,its almost as though they are in a state of confusion and need to learn the truer story of the Romany & Gypsy heritage rather then what they probably see as a modern day traveller, thats their problem not yours.

Stand tall and stay proud, more inteliegent people know you are a lovely person.
