Nanna Gaynor (June nr Preston's Daughter) Report 7 Oct 2007 17:31

I don't know what's up with me at the moment ... I just seem to be so tired lately. Maybe it's the onset of Winter although this has been going on for about 8 or 9 months now.

I get up early in the mornings, usually around 6:30am because although I get so tired, I wake up and just can't get back to sleep, I start to get uncomfortable in bed so I get up. A couple of hours later though I feel like I could sleep for England, but of course by that time I need to go to work and can't go back to bed.

I often sit at my desk at work and I have to really force myself to stay awake, I could just close my eyes and drop off for a while. Sometimes I go and sit in the ladies and lean against the wall and close my eyes for a few minutes but I'm worried that I could actually fall asleep so I can't relax too much.

I come home in the evening and seem to snooze for most of the evening until bedtime (I must be really boring company for my hubby) and then go to bed around 11:00pm.

OH bought some multi vitamins with iron and some caffeine tablets for me which work a little and I take an energy drink to work with me like Red Bull but it's Asda's own make instead, but I get a headache which must be the caffeine... but also I don't think it can be too good for me if I need to rely on these to keep me awake. I still find though that I feel very, very drowsy a few hours after I have taken them, I feel like my eyes have sunken when this happens.

Does anyone else get affected by these sort of symptoms and how do you deal with it?

It really is getting me down now. I had a thyroid test a couple of years ago and the results showed that I was borderline with an under active thyroid, they re tested and it came back the same so my GP wouldn't give me anything for it because it was only borderline, so I don't think it will be that either.

Any ideas how I can get some energy back would be very welcome

Gaynor, please go and get another blood test, asap. You could be anaemic, or your thyroid might have got a bit worse..or this could be the onset of diabetes. Are you thirsty a lot as well?

Gaynor I had the same symptoms as you and got the same response from my gp
a fasting blood test showed Iwas diabetic and my thyroid was intermittently underactive.
I literally did fall asleep standing up once so I think you should go back to your gp
take care'

Gaynor, it is wonderful to se your name on the boards again.. but please do as your told and get to your GP as soon as possible!!!. And point out that if your thyroid is continually at borderline, your body is not operating at full throttle so to speak. the line at borderline is fuzzy.. some people operate well, others feel symptoms such as yours. But you need to see your doctor.

Good luck.. and make the appointment tomorrow... very pretty please!!

I don't think I'm diabetic... I'm not particularly thirsty and i know my blood count is ok cos my Dad's diabetic and I tested it with his sticky pen thingy. I was 4.7 which he says is good.
Hubby wondered about the iron which is why he got multi vits with iron.
I think I may have to go back to the Doc though, I don't like to sound like I'm moaning though.

We are all entitled to moan sometimes, and although tiredness doesn't sound like much of a symptom, it can indicate something bigger.

Glad you tested yourself for your blood sugars, sounds good.

I'd get tested again for the thyroid at least.

I have to admit.... although we laugh about it at home... I DID fall asleep standing up in shower one night !!! How is THAT possible? But I did all the same even though it must have only been for a few seconds. lol

gaynor, you cant judge your blood sugars by that test sometimes mines ok.you need to have a fasting blood test which can check your bloods from the passt few weeks which is how long it takes for each cell to die.
also my thyroid was borderline for 2yrs before it dropped further and I needed thyroxine.
even if it isnt either of these, something isnt right so please go and get it sorted.
Do you have very heavy periods as that can drain you too.

EB
My periods are a bit dodgy now... I have been tested for a couple of years ago aswell and I am heading for the menopause I know this. I have irregular periods now every 4-7 weeks usually. I am very heavy for 1-2 days and then it sems to stop after the 3rd day.
I am due right now.

Actually EB is right, your sugars might have been ok at the time you tested, so don't eliminate it. A fasting blood test will show sugar levels from the last three months, and glucose leaves a trail, which won't be picked up on a home testing kit.

You could just be run down, you have been through an awful lot over the last year or so, but please don't ignore it, get it sorted. It's not moaning.

Hi Gaynor

It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D,) caused by low light levels. We have endured a very dull year and many people are suffering from this. Try googling it and see if it fits your condition.

Nanna Gaynor (June nr Preston's Daughter) Report 8 Oct 2007 19:45

My Mum had an underactive thyroid but it wasn't diagnosed until she was about 70... she had a job getting it diagnosed too... I think our GP is maybe rather cautious.
I will go to the Dr's but at the moment we have only 3 of our 5 staff in the office and I am training 2 girls from another office (My Boss is off sick.... ) Anyway it's a bit difficult at the moment but I WILL go.

Oh !!! ..... and something else...

when I sit in certain positions my ears go funny inside.. well sort of in the fleshy part of your neck under your ears next to your jaw bone and it feels strange when I yawn ....

and I wake up in the night with an irritating tickle in my throat so I have to always take a glass of water to bed with me these days ....

Sorry... promise I will stop moaning now
