My 4 x Great Grandfather ran the Green Dragon Inn in Barford St Martin Wiltshire between 1839 and 1854. It is now called the Barford Inn. He brewed his own beer on the site. I think it must of been the best beer in Wiltshire because he died aged 39 of enlargement of the liver which is caused by drinking too much.

My family in the 1800s/early 1900's owned a few pups in Co. Durham One of my great-grandfather's - Peter Donnison - was born in The Plough Inn, Haswell, Co. Durham (A brother of his - James - died there in 1919). He lived in The Bonnie Pit Lad Inn (his residence in 1901 and at time of marriage in 1903) where his father (James) and one if his brothers (George) both died. There was also talk about another of his brother (John Robert) owned the Working Mens Club in Murton, Co. Durham - although I'm not 100% convinced!

My gt gt grandfather ran The Bowling Green pub in Elmstead Market, Essex, from the 1920s-1950s, before that he had ran The Castle Inn at Ramsey. My 3 x gt grandfather Samuel Vine ran The Hambro Arms at Milton Abbas, Dorset (1860s-70s) and a 4 x gt grandfather Richard Williams ran The Spyway Inn at Askerswell, Dorset (1850s-60s). Another 3x gt grandfather Thomas Robert Nobbs ran The Ostrich in Norwich and his son Robert Thomas Nobbs ran The Kings Head, Hempnall, Norfolk (1890s-1900). We always try to visit the village pubs in places where our ancestors have lived as apart from the church they are often the oldest surviving buildings, and it's nice to think that our ancestors once drank there as well. At least that's my excuse for visiting as many as possible!

Hey Lin is that why you're in paradise hic hic. Interesting thread this, just found out through my searches that one of my g.g.aunt's married into a Huxstep family who for years ran a pub in Shooters Hill called The Earl of Moira. Next time I'm up there I'm gonna have a look see if it's still there. Coincidence, 'cos my cousin ran pubs and still have family in the trade. Just nipping off for a VAT. Jan

This is a really interesting thread! I keep checking to see if anyone is "related" to a pub near me! My gt. grandfather was a publican (somewhere in Norfolk) and his son was the landlord at The Crown in Pulham Market, Norfolk from 1934 - 1949. Me - I just keep the local hostelries in business! Any relatives in the licenced trade? I have several: - a great-uncle who retired from the Met and ran either the Black Horse or the White Horse in Hertford, and another pub, the Crown Inn in Northwold. - a grandfather who was a distillers servant in 1901 in Hoxton - on my mother's side a great x ever so many lots aunt, appropriately called Nancy Brewer who ran an alehouse - my husband has a gt x 2 grandfather who was running the Bricklayers Arms in Kender Street, Deptford in 1901 - he is described on the census as a beer retailer working at home! and for those of you who visit the Family Records Centre, you may have passed the Pakenham Arms on the corner of Pakenham Street and Calthorpe Street [the pub's address is actually Calthorpe st but at the other end of the road is the Calthorpe Arms - original, huh?] . This pub is now adorned with flower baskets and painted bright yellow, but in the 1920s it had Chas Carter as its landlord and he was my husband's great-grandfather. He ran the pub with his sons, and my mother-in-law was born in an upstairs room there. Later they moved to the Downham in Downham Road, which is where Hackney Archives is based. nell

We were on our way to the Great DorsetSteam Fair, back in the Summer when we found an old Breweru lorry parked in a lay-by.They were just about to drive off, but we managed to flag them down in time.We had quite a long talk with the driver and his wife. My 4x great Uncle Robert had 2 pubs that I know of - The Grapes Inn in Filey and The Cross Keys in Nafferton. He was fined £2 in 1882 for selling out of hours. When he died in 1891 his wife took over at the Cross Keys for 3 years then moved down the road to the Kings Head. She was the licensee there until she remarried in 1900. Then her new husband took over. Jeanette x

My great-grandfather ran the Sir Henry Wilmot Arms in Derby, now gone, where he died by falling into a vat of boiling water whilst brewing, according to his death certificate. After tht his wife became the licencee and from what I can gather, married a customer. The other side of the family ran the Rose and Crown in Chellaston, Derby in the earlier 1900's.
