My Great x 3 grandad George Tate, was Publican/Coal Merchant at the Canal Tavern, Whitley, North Yorkshire. I searched for ages to find his pub and finally found him in a 1838 Trade Directory in Wakefield Library when I was searching for information for someone else! I live not far from Whitley and have been for a quick look around but don't think that the pub is there now. Unless anyone on here knows different? Maggy

I have a relly (ggg grandfather) who ran the White Horse in Orford, and his brother ran the other pub in Orford at the same time (Kings Head, I think) GGGGGG grandfather was a bricklayer foreman who also owned 'The Bricklayers' (now a private house) in Romsey, and another relly who was a 'painter/landlord' of the Shirley Hotel in Southampton. Oh, and my GG uncle fell down the stairs of the Freemantle Arms in Southampton after a union meeting and died aged 77! - (What was he doing at a union meeting at that age?????) This pub is recommended by CAMRA, so must give it a visit! lol maggie

My husband's GGrandfather's bother Edward Nicholson was the Inn Keeper at the New Ship Inn, Shore , Leith in 1891. It was a really rough place in it's time and the customers were mostly sailors and the "ladies' who entertained them. Since 1980's The Shore at Leith has become one of the trendy places to live, even The Royal Yacht Britannia lives there now and the Inn is still there, now an upmarket restaurant/pub. Unfortunately poor old Edward died in 1897 from cirhossis, so I guess he must have been drinking the profits! Christine

My gt gt gt gt grandfather's brother was publican at the Red Lion in Hinxton, Cambs. His son Richard was born there. Went to visit Richard's gt grandson last week for the first time(my 3rd cousin twice removed) then had lunch in the pub. It is a gorgeous 16th century inn that has been kept beautifully over the years. Richard's cousin, my gt gt gt grandfather, was a carpenter in the village, so it was fab to touch the beams and wonder which ones he had repaired! Maz. XX

Gt Gt Uncle Benjamin Brewerton ran the BLACK LION pub in Middlesbrough. He is on the 1881. My Gt. Gt. Grandfather ran the SIR ROBERT PEEL INN in Dresden, Stoke on Trent. 1871/1881. Thanks to a wonderful pottiers site have managed to do a 'virtual' walk around Dresden and have photo of pub, and 2 churches connected to family. I just Googled the name of the pub.

I had a gg-gf who switched from being a coalman to keep the Stags Head in Lincoln in 1891. In 1901 his son kept the pub and another son kept the Lion and Snake. My grandmother and her 2nd husband kept the Beehive in Whitehaven in the early 1950s.

My ggg grandfather ran the Royal Oak in Nailsea, Somerset. He was set up at the pub by his father-in-law Daniel Thatcher who ran the brewery in Nailsea. There were lots of Thatchers breweries all over Somerset, I have got a list of them and am painstakingly trying to see if there is a family link between all these Thatcher brewers. Slow progress so far I must admit!! Brewing obviously does not run in my blood though as I tried to make some cider once- it was disgusting!!!!
