My only worry (as a sixty-year-old who tints out the white at the front) is that anyone coming up from behind me gets a shock when they see my face! A good CUT is the most important thing as we get older. Our Minister has had her locks cut and looks YEARS younger. Lily

Lynn, Do what you feel comfortable with. You had shortish hair for a while didn't you? Perhaps you just need a 'style' to it as it's not one thing or the other right now. You should have called and I'd have been round with me scissors! LOL See you for a coffee sometime Love Viv.

Viv if you are still up to scratch lol we could chat about it, I started growing it long when I hit 40 probably the wrong time to do it looking back. Just feel I need updating a bit xxhugxx

Its a very personal thing Lindy as a young hairdresser I used to think ladies who wore their hair long after 45 or so were silly as it drags the face down and we don't need that but if you have a nice well groomed down to the chin length I think now that I'm near 60 myself that its lovely if its well groomed of course and you can then wear it up and do all sorts of things with it for a change which is beaut, I wear mine short as possible at the moment heading fo the heat of Far north Queensland but am thinking of a change when we get home as daughter getting married july 2006 and would love to be slimmer and have different hair style altogether have you found something in a magazine on a lady with similar shaped face as you that is a start , and you can then work on what you want from there. best of luck Lara

Go for a loverly twink perm dearie. You can use fag papers...no-one will notice gal ! Smother the smell of the twink in lavender water. Or even cheaper than that gal, Put yer finger in the socket....lovely tight perm to make Leo sayer proud. That and a lovely blue rinse should set it off nice. Fink we should all get old disgracefully eh ? PS: dont ferget yer twin set and pearls. Mildred Honkinbottom x (Pinny Gang) :o))))

Twink perm my goodness that is going back a bit if I remember rightly they really stunk, rather like the floor levelling compound currently trying to dry in my kitchen lol. Perm is not on the cards looking for something really easy to look after with a bit of tweaking each morning, does anyone remember the feather cut of the 70s? a modern version of that is currently favourite, I have found a picture though I hear hairdresser hate folk who appear with a picture but it will purely be used as a guidline. All this fuss over a head of hair!!! maybe I should just have it all shaved off for charity instead then start all over again. xxhugxx

Hi Lindy, I started growing my hair when I became a student at 40 (anything to save money!!) It had been greying since I was 20, so I regularly dyed it in various colours, with most of the dye at the top, on the roots - it was an intriguing rainbow of different shades of brown, but I wore it in a french plait so no-one really noticed! I had it cut off after 7 years, and I DID take a photo, as I wanted an extremely short cut and the hairdresser was nervous about lopping off my, by now, waist length hair. Then I stopped dying it, so I could see how grey it was!! 3 years on, I let it grow a bit before I have it cut and have lots of different 'short' styles - I also put in wash in/wash out dyes - they come in LOTS of colours and cling to the grey in a satisfying manner!! If you don't like it short - you can always grow it again. maggie

Hi Lindy, I don't think its a matter of young or old, it's what suits you that counts. Some of us look dreadful with short hair - all face and no hair! Look at Jerry Hall - she's gorgeous - middle aged with long hair!! Can't imagine her with short hair. If the hair is quite thick it could be cut to shoulder length withouit dragging the face down. Add some great highlights and you'll look fantastic! Kathyxx

Lindy, I agree with most of the others who've posted - do what you feel will make you happiest. If you choose a shorter style that suits you, why not go for it. Personally, at 56, I still have long, light-brown hair, and I don't care what anyone else says, I like it that way, so do my husband and son, and intend to keep it unless and until I change my mind. I don't care if other people think I look like an old witch, I find my hair easy to manage and I'm used to it. In hot weather I can pin it up out of the way and feel cooler, in cold weather I can put it inside my jacket and it helps keep me warm. For special occasions, I can make it look different, if I want to, and it's easy to manage. It's quite fine, straight hair and has never taken well to any attempts to make it curl - even Twink perms, which my Mum used to torture me with as a child! At the end of the day, it's YOUR hair, so it should be YOUR choice how you wear it. Best of luck on Tuesday! Look forward to seeing the result when you hand over Gaynor Bear. CB >|< X

I always thought middle age and long hair didn't work but why not? I had my hair cut really short and since moving away from England have not had it cut .... now I can put it up out of the way in the day (hot!) and down if I want in the evening... we shouldn't have to conform to outdated ideas. If you like your hair long keep it! but if you cut it you can always grow it again! Jacquie (just past her middle years!)

Lindy,Before having it 'Cut',Stand outside your local Hairdressers, and watch the amount of 'Clones'come out,Then you will realise that you can have your Hair Long,Short (Piled on top) or in a 'French Pleat. Once its Cut it takes ages to grow again and have these choices. Hal.

Hi Linda Im 48 and have long dark hair although its dyed now, I dont think your too old for long hair as long as you go the hairdressers regularly. I had all my long hair cut short when I turned 40 and regretted it, everyone said I looked to fierce, so I let it grow it again. It up to you, if you think its going to suit you and your going to feel good, do it. The good thing about short hair is it doesnt take long to wash and dry and it. Best of Luck. Eve

i think you should do what you want. though having cut many womens hair i would say that when it gets too long it can become ageing, its sometimes better to have it cut to shoulder length so you still feel like you have some hair and are able to put it up if you want. good luck Karen

U call that long, do what u feel best, not many women of any age have long hair and therefore u can't get many styles, I think more people should have long hair then some other styles might be found. AL

I think if a woman wears her hair long in middle age then it really needs to be in tip top conditioner and thick.........fine wispy long hair doesn't look good at any age.

Christine2 Report 16 May 2005 16:29

Lindy So much depends on the type of hair you have and your face shape. A good hairdresser should advise you of the best style. I would LOVE a short modern spiky style but I know that my hair and face wouldn't take it. My hair is quite fine but a lot of it. Without a light perm it's as straight as pump water and would make me look haggard. If you have thick bouncy hair and a fairly small face , I would say 'go for it'. Age doesn't come into it. We're all 21 anyway aren't we:)))) Chrissie x

As long as you're happy with the colour, cut and style then that's all that's important. I grew my hair long and loved it but then it was suggested I had it cut. I did (and had highlights done which I'd never had picked myself) and I am so pleased with the results. Have never had so many compliments and it makes me feel more confident and attractive... couldn't care less what everyone else thinks! Becx (Not old but with shortish hair)

Lindy I've chopped and changed over the years but always end up growing it longish again. Last time it was short was 4 years ago when I turned 40 and it was fabulous! However, there wasn't a lot I could do with it and at least the long hair is versatile. Having said that, I am thinking of chopping it again and, as time flies quicker the older you get, then in no time at all it will be long again if I change my mind! If you feel like a change go for it! Daisy
