I have been thinking about whether I'm for or against animal testing for a few days now. The fact that it is ANIMALS we test rather than humans makes me think it is wrong simply due to ratomorphism. Yet if someone I loved was going to die without a medicine that had been tested on animals, then I wouldn't think twice in insisting it was used... What do you think?

Becs, I too think the same, im an animal lover and hate the idea of animal testing but if a member of my family needed a certain drug then I too would have to allow it to be used!!

Not reading the dictionary, learnt about it when I studied Psychology. Will try and find a definition.

im a bit torn bec. i think testing cosmetics on animals, or keeping things for fur is wrong and should be outlawed. however, i do take the point about the medical research. i know for a fact that people wouldn't be surviving cancer like they are without tests on animals. so i guess im for one and against the other. xx

Paul, im the same as you!!Cosmetics and fur trade no way!!!

As an animal lover I too find this hard. However - provided the testing is done in as humane a way as possible and I think animal testing has been tightened up since those days of beagles being forced to inhale smoke nonstop. I cannot in all honesty stop the testing of medication etc which will save/improve human life. However I am utterly against any testing of beauty products on animals. Ann

I agree with Paul (from Hampshire) I am totally against testing cosmetics on animals and although I wish there was a better way I can understand the animal testing for medical research! Julie xxx

I actually CANNOT find a definition of ratomorphism so will (badly) try and explain it... Basically animals are animals and we are humans. So just because a drug does something to a rat (for example) doesn't mean that it will have the same effect on a human. (Apologies for my bad explaination

Roxanne

Roxanne Report 24 Aug 2005 15:02

we are not compatable, i have always thought this and they do end up being tested on humans anyway!!!

Poolmaster

Poolmaster Report 24 Aug 2005 15:04

I do have an answer to alternative testing ideas, but would be booted off if I voiced them!!!

Drugs DO get tested on humans!! My FIL is one of those human guinea pigs!! He has and is testing drugs for epilepsy. The drugs he takes are not fully understood so that is why he is closely monitored and they do cause side effects which are counteracted by other drugs he has to take!! X

OK I understand your poinr Bec. However surely medical science is at such a point that they can compensate for this ? I agree with the majority so far. Animal testing for cosmetics ? no. Animal testing (as humanely as possible) for medical purposes ? yes, absolutely. Paul ps what that poor family that bred guinea pigs for research has been put through is absolutely disgusting

Bec Report 24 Aug 2005 15:10

Susie - Of course, and I think it's a good idea becx

Paul - I absolutely agree! All those 'terrorists' have done is given legitimate animal rights activists a bad name! Lock them up in a cage! becx

If I was the animal would I hurt less if I was being used for medical research rather than cosmetics research ?
