According to this, the average Briton has had 9 sexual partners. What do you think? Does it sound too high, too low or about right? And if it's right, do you think we have too many partners nowadays or that it's a respectable number?

I wasn't asked to do the survey but that figure is way too high for me. Mind you if it was all youngsters a lot seem to have different partner each week.

David I don't think there is a 'right' amount. This is a matter best left to individuals. Some people go through life with no sexual partners, others have several, some have many. What is important is that people don't take advantage of or abuse others. Sex is one part of human relationships and not necessarily the most important part. nell

lol Farthur Christmas:) Dawn - I didn't think the figure was very high really as an average (not for a lifetime!). I agree with you Nell, that there isn't a right amount:) But I'm interested to see what others think as I was listening to a few comments today and was surprised at a few things that were said.

David Probably not high suppose it depends what type of upbringing you have and when you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. And suppose you can never predict whats round the corner. Well if thats the average I had better bump the old man off and start having some fun. Nell is right though there can't be a right or wrong answer depends on each individual circumstance. Now I've got a headache.

I wish they wouldn't say pointless things like this! It makes people feel inadequate, then unhappy, and then they do things they regret!

Hi David ;-) I would think it depends on the people that were asked the question, age group I would say makes a difference in a survey like this. Like Nell I don't think there is a right amount, but I will say I was amazed at some of the figures Worldwide. Turkey was the highest I believe 14.5 while India the lowest 3.0. I was also astounded Ireland came in so high at 11.1 while the United States was less at 10.7. How times change lol. it just goes to show I should listen to myself when I see don't prejudge as I was sure United States would be much higher than UK & Ireland. The most worrying part of the Survey I think were the figures for unprotected sex 47% globally, this was with a partner people did not know the others sexual history, surely they are playing with fire. A Frightening statistic I think. Pat x

That's the problem with averages though, they have the potential to be hopelessly misleading. If your survey features a large group of people who've had none or very few sexual partners and a large group who've had plenty then you're going to end up with an average somewhere in the middle of the two opposites and completely unrepresentative of those who took part in the survey. Not saying that this is what has happened here but it's worth keeping in mind. Also if you end up believing everything you read, the chances are you might end up with a warped view that everyone is naturally promiscuous these days lol. That aside, I agree with what Nell originally said as well.
