Can you please explain to me WHY people feel they should be sitting at their computers deleting answers to other peoples threads? What is the point? or am I missing something really important here? Pat x

hiya Pat I dunno about everyone else but I do it so my list of 'my threads only' isn't so long. I keep interesting ones I may want to read again, or ones that people may re-read one day. I delete answers to quizzes etc. I think it's a kind of neat-freak OCD thing for me. ;-))) xx Jen

Good question Pat! I find it quite odd that just that part seems to keep disappearing. Thought they would have deleted the whole thing

I'm not sure I understand the question. Messages can only be deleted by the person who wrote them, or by GR. If you mean, why are people spending all their time complaining... well there's an interesting question, and I don't have an answer. I have in the past complained about a few posts that I found objectionable, generally when someone was being abusive toward another member of the board.. Sometimes they've been removed, sometimes they haven't. I've also been told by GR in teh past that they have removed individual posts that were unpleasant, rather than the whole thread, but I know its more common that the whole thread goes.

Sorry to those who do not understand what I mean I shall try and clarify. I didn't want to take over the other thread which is the one called 'silly question' The person is asking about removing their own contributions to other peoples threads, WHY would they want to do this? I thought the only people who do that are the nasties removing the naughty things they put up. If they are ordinary threads with nothing controversial on them WHY would anyone sit at their computer removing this harmless stuff? It makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever to me, I have never done it and I shall not be starting now. So many old threads have been ruined by this and also ruined when anyone that has left or has been booted their stuff has disappeared :-( it has made so many old threads unreadable, better off they are not stored as they are a total waste of time. I stand by my OCD post! Also, as Gwynne said, I don't want to keep quiz threads or quick question threads (for example) filling up my list. I do keep the fun or useful or interesting ones to look back at sometimes. :-))) Jen

Well I find the best way to save anything is to copy and paste the thread while its current, its then saved as it was added to and as it was meant to be. A longtime ago I decided never to trust Genes storage because of people ruining the original threads and the removal of members that also ruins them. I very rarely need to use the facility of genes to look for anything its really pointless doing so. Thank you for everyone's input :-) Pat x

Mind you, Pat, the first thought that came to my mind just now was that so many people are afraid of replying these days, I wonder if they'd replied, then preferred to delete their reply in case they get criticized over what they've said? Just a thought, and possibly the wrong one. But yes, it's confusing sometimes! x

Yes Glenys that does happen too often on here, it's nothing new it's always been the case and I think its terrible, even if one person feel that way. Pat x

Gwynne didn't say its all nasty as I know it isn't ALL I said its mostly nasty. If I want to see a very old thread on here its not really worthwhile is it? if so many people keep deleting stuff its all going to be disjointed? The greatest example of this was on tips board 'the most amusing' series of threads they were the funniest ever on GR (I wasn't the only person to believe that to be true either) then people left GR others got booted not many had deliberately deleted stuff just the usual missing pieces from ex. members. well the whole lot was ruined it makes no sense and the fun is gone since that happened, it may as well all be deleted now :-( I have made a point since then not to go looking for any old additions I have made to delete them. Anything I need to check or look up again is on my computer :-))) To me its a waste of storage space by GR maybe GR should do a bit of housework and delete threads like that rather than current ones or bit of them LMHO. Hi Sorry but if I put something on someone else's thread I will stand by what I put at the time of posting. What is the point of contributing to it in the first place otherwise. Unless it is going to make my computer work faster, then why I would want to spend my time trawling through threads months later to wipe out what I said. Its the most ludicrous thing I've heard yet. I delete old threads of my own every so often and don't notice that my computer works any quicker doing that boring exercise either. I've seen threads where postings have disappeared and even a Martian would find difficulty in making sense of them. The only logical reason I see anyone deleting their postings on someone else's thread is if they think they have written something on there which may in the future come back and bite them on the bum!

I am also of the 'life is too short' school of thinking - have never been able to understand deleting - unless someone is actually offended and asks you to .... Maz. XX

Hi Pat, I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Jen and Gwynne on this one. I delete my own inconsequential threads (Yes, OK, I know most of them are!), as I don't like my 'old threads' list to go beyond a manageable level, and for me, that ain't very far! LOL I think what you're saying about threads being 'spoilt' is a valid point, but I've never seen why GR feel the need, when someone leaves or is removed from the site, to delete everything that person has ever written. If they just removed anything offensive, that would go part-way to solving the problem. However, there have been many occasions when I've lost my rag with people and deleted my posts. I do that because they've led to some sort of argument or unpleasant remarks, and I have no wish to foster those things or leave my posts as targets to be picked on. If people want to argue or fling insults, they can do so without my assistance, and removing my posts also stops me from blowing my top with people, which ain't a pretty sight! It's like a safety valve. Unfortunately, I've now got to a stage where I find I'm feeling like doing that more and more often. I don't mind people disagreeing with me, but I cannot bear people pontificating that everyone else should do, say and feel the same as they do, or people who constantly profess one thing and do the opposite. I've been working hard on my family history research and my trees in recent months, and I cut and paste posts which contain info relevant to that, which are of help - or might be in the future. I tend to use GR to gather info and store it, then if something has 'passed it's sell-by date', I'll delete it. I also delete people from my Contacts list if I havent' heard from them for a while, as I like to keep that to a manageable 10 pages or less. When I need a break, I look at the Gen Board, and sometimes I'll call up an old thread to remind myself of something I've forgotten - and I agree it is sometimes frustrating when things have disappeared, but it's down to the individuals to decide to remove or not, so I have to respect their decisions. Sorry to ramble, but I wanted to be as clear as possible. CB >|< X
