JenRedPurple Report 29 Jun 2006 20:45

:-))) scrounged one a few months ago, as I think you know Dee - it is absolute bliss to trawl through the old vinyl, and listen to your own past! Highly recommended for any old hippies/ rockers/ soul fans...

We have a turn table

My husband has a record player, which is at the bottom of the wardrobe. It only plays 33 and a third. He also has a collection of 45rpm singles, which are unplayable. Mind you he hardly ever plays CDs either and has just got himself an mp3 player for commuting. When I was a little girl we had a record player buried in a ginormous table with a lift up lid as well as two ancient wind-up gramophones which played with darning-needle sized record needles. We had some bakelite records to play on them. I remember Max Bygraves 'Gillygillyossenfeatherkatzenellenbogenbythesea' was one of them, and Colonel Bogey another. nell

I am so envious of those with 'turntables' My first one only played 78's, and had to be wound up. Guess I am one of the few people to have Little White Bull on 78!! ;-))

:-))) well, if we're gonna be really 'hangin with the kids', we should call them 'decks'!

Why are 78s needles 2 or 3 pound each? they used to be dirt cheap. Happy days

TonyW Report 29 Jun 2006 20:53

I've got some old 78's of Al Jolson! I can remember singing along with my old nana. Plus a load of rock stuff from my teens - can't play it but I suppose I could get it all out and have a look. Or maybe visit a car boot sale on Sunday.....

I found a guy locally who was able to put my 78's on to a CD for me, pure nostalgia. He managed to put all my late Dad's favourites on one CD for me ;-))

Yes, and I wouldn't trade if for all the best cd players in the world. I go to cheap record shops and get albums at least £10 cheaper than if they were cd's. Good thing I'm set in my ways when it comes to music. However the most expensive record I have cost over £100 and is no worth around £500.

We have a turntable Dee, which is how hubby has managed to copy loads of LPs onto CDs. By the way, it is in the post. Ann x

Hi Kirsten, I am intrigued to know what your valuable track is I once had a 45 made by a band of guys I was at school with. One of them went on to be quite famous, sadly I gave the record away. My son looked it up in a directory once and it might have been worth something Thanks Ann ;-))

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 29 Jun 2006 21:22

what record is that Kirsten? Ann Glos

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 29 Jun 2006 21:24

We gave all our 78s away to somebody who collected them in about 1970. they included Gracie fields singing 'The little pudding basin that belonged to Aunty Flo' Goodness knows where we got that from. But we still have loads of LPs. Ann Glos

We have a 1970's Rock Ola Juke Box It has never ever gone wrong and plays 45's. The only problem is, I've lost the key and cant change the records. LOL Margaret
