hal without us smokers the NHS would be in a worse state than it is now,cos the revenue from fags goes mainly to the NHS to keep it afloat. susie |

Susie (being an ex smoker 4 months) I have to agree with you on your comment about taxes.. But also have to state that a lot of the money that does go into the nhs goes back out on smokers.. not trying to argue but just stating a fact. Hence the nhs giving away free patches. I would have stood and fought my corner on why I had the right to smoke ect.. Until I quit and now I realise I wasnt that clever at all. Debs x Not trying to convert anyone LOL |

Your're ill-informed Hal:) The new airplane won't be here until after Tony Blair has left power. I smoke because I want to and I don't think a fiver for a packet of cigarettes constitutes great wealth myself but it's my business what I spend my hard eanred wages on:) |

Hiya Susie:) You're right about the NHS being so well funded from smokers too. Hope yr mum's ok:) Debs, given that everything from clubfoot to endocarditis seems to be called a 'smoking-related disease', it's hardly a surprise that we are blamed with draining the NHS lol |

hal lol this fag is mighty good lol its not that we are rich at all but we dont drink, and we never go out anymore because i spend every hour god sends at work or looking after my mum. i admire you for giving up,but at the moment i dont feel that i can. david thankyou for asking after mum,i appreciate it. she is doing ok,but we are still waiting for the wheelchair:( once that has arrived then the physio can start working on mums back muscles, cos at the moment she cant even support herself so she is surrounded by 15 pillows to keep her upright.they are all round her shoulders, back and down the sides of her legs,so she doesnt keep going lopsided. susie |

David Your so right, but what still surprises me are the people who have emphaseama (sp) who still smoke and being no cure of course, I see some with it walking around with the tubes up the noses and oxygen tanks in the shopping carts, that was enough for me to say no thanks. And I did it for 20 odd yrs and still in mid 30's!! But again its a personal choice, I used to really enjoy my cigs on the porch with a coffee but decided I dont want to do it anymore. I dont lecture but at the same time dont like it being blown in my face, never liked it when I was a smoker though, Debs x |

Karen, Susie, I read it on the BBC website that the DR's were giving them to patients to help them quit. You might have to pay prescription charges but consider that against the cost of the cigs. My brother got them from the Doc's... He didnt use them though.. But you do have to want to do it im afraid otherwise you will smoke on them (did that last year lol). Have to say that I have seen a report out in a mag saying you should put the patches on about 3 days before your last cig to give the nicotine from the patches time to get into your system. Purple Lady I know its not easy stopping especially when you enjoy them, and to be honest you wont quit until your ready to, I found stopping nowhere near as hard as I think it should have been, not saying it was a walk in the park but no nightmare either, the reason for this I think is because I had had enough and wanted to stop. Debs x P.s I did say I didnt want to lecture so please dont think I am trying to do this or convert anyone x |

Hope it turns up soon Susie. Sue Suffolk - it's funny how differently things affect us. Having seen four non smokers die from cancer in the last three years, it makes me think if something's going to get you it will. I'm sorry you've been through all that though. |

I am a smoker, not a heavy smoker but still enjoy the occasional one here and there, I did stop for 4 1/2 years, and my health went so bad, I decided that if I was going to go, then I would go happier than I was feeling at the time, my nan never smoked and she had cancer...... Bev |

I honestly think that genes(not this sitelol) has alot to do with cancer and other illness,if your unfortunate to have the gene thats your fate, and yes!if you have the cancer gene and people you know died of lung cancer then it could give you more of a chance of getting it. My husband has severe chest problems,he started smoking when he was 27 he gave up when he was 35 and started again when he was 55 and gave up recently! Againlol His chest problems are down to the asbestos he worked with, but the smoking hasent helped but it was not the cause. |

I recently gave up for 6 weeks but have fell off the wagon :-( I will quit but am now having trouble finding the willpower to re try. I have seen both sides with the lung cancer, my father was a heavy smoker but my mil was never a smoker , got them both at an early age. I read recently that Allen Carr the no smoking guru has just been diagonosed with lung cancer 23 years after he quit. Its really done to personal choice |
