Did any of your ancestors fight in a war, such as WW1? If so were they part of the army, navy, or something else?

Had an Uncle who went down with HMS Repulse in the South China Seas. He was saved. Went from the Repulse to the Prince of Wales and was sunk on that one as well. Both capital ships were lost. Eventually picked up by the escort vessels and in time back to UK. have his service record. My father was in reserved occupation in HM Dockyard Devonport. Other Uncles called up but were unfit for active duty. They were still in the Army though and persued their trades on Army Camps viz painter and decorators. Sister was in Land Army. Still rtemember quite a lot.

Sadly my Great Grandfathers medals had to be sold off, my Great Gran had five girls to bring up. She had to sell them and a piano because she was means tested.

During WW2, my father was a Royal Marine, his brother a Sergeant Major in the Army, one brother I think was killed, and the youngest was in the Home Guard. One of their sisters was in the ATS. Another uncle was at Arnheim. My great uncle also lied about his age and survived the Somme. Was decorated too. Went to America, Made a fortune on Wall Street, lost it and sat at the next table to Al Capone in a restaurant in Chicago! There is another who I think would be my g/g/uncle. Haven't researched him yet. He was in the Black Watch and highly decorated. My parents say his portrait is hanging in the BW Museum in Perth. My mum's brother and my aunt although they didn't fight in the war were just as much a part of it. They met and married when they worked in the King Aircraft factory in Glasgow building warplanes. My husband's grandfather was killed in April 1918, leaving 2 sons aged 6 and 4. He was in the Devonshire Regt. and had been awarded the Military Medal. His brother had been killed 4 years earlier. My Canadian grandfather fought with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France, was wounded and sent to convalesce at Woodcote Camp in Epsom, Surrey, England, which was about half a mile from where I live now and I can see it from outside my house! My Canadian grandmother's younger brother was killed in France aged just 20 on 28 September 1918. He had been awarded the Military Medal and Bar earlier in WW1. My English grandfather signed up as soon as he was 18 in May 1918, but was only sent to France after the fighting was over. My Dad was in the Canadian Army in WW2 and was at Dunkirk. He was wounded and sent to England to convalesce and there he met my Mum! Sue xx
