My grandmothers brother, Robert Halliday, K.O.S.B. was killed on 12/07/1915 in Gallipoli. His mother Lillias Riddell, went every day to the station to wait for him to return. She died in 1921 as my grandmother said 'of a broken heart'. |

Two of my Dad's brothers were KIA in WW1. One was 20 years of age died 1916 t'other was also 20 years of age died 1918 - a month before the Armistice. Both were in the Sherwood Foresters. A cousin age 19 died in WW2 in 1943 taking part in the first 1000 bomber raid on Germany. Another cousin died in France in 1944 he was in Lincs Regt he was 27. My father served during WW2, I served on Active Service in Aden 1967 and my Son In Law was in at the start of the last Gulf War - he's in the TA. Doubtless others of the family also served in one of the WW or places such as Korea etc but no info as yet. |

Yes, quite a few, Dad was a Gordon Highlander, who was in Palestine at the end of the war, and was in Berlin at the time of the Berlin air lift, he was one of the soldiers helping to unload the aircraft, his dad was in the Royal Irish rifles and went over the top on the first day of the battle of the Somme, he only got as far as the barbed wire in no mans land...he was one of the lucky ones, he made it home... My father was in the R.A.M.C. in Italy in WW2. He told us many stories about Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Pompei etc.He always said he would take us there but he could never afford to. A couple of moths ago I won £1,747 on the lottery so me and my sister are going to take a trip to all these places and I know my dad will be with us as will all the memories of his stories. Elaine. |

My nan's brother died in WW1 in Somme, France aged 28. He was a driver with the Royal Field Artillery. He was taking ammunition to the front line and he and his horses got a direct hit and all died together. I have the letter that was sent to my nan explaining what had happened. His parents had died when he was young so he was looked after by his aunt and uncle who were my grandads parents. My nan kept all the postcards he sent her from his army days, which I now have and will treasure for her. I also have a memoirs book written by his younger cousin (who thought that he was her brother). In the book she describes the trauma caused to all the family by his death. He sounded a very fine much loved young man. Arthur James Whiting 6.8.1888 to 6.10.1916 |

My great uncle was gassed during world war1 and survived a wee while after-but he didn't 'make old bones' as my ma-in-law says. My pa-in-law served with the coldstream guard during ww2 in Burma. |
