**~~** Mad Moo **~~** Report 5 Mar 2007 18:42

Hello all Long time no post. Well here's the reason why.................. For those of you that read my posts last month I apologise for repeating myself, but I think we all need to be aware that people are NOT always what they seem !!!!!!!!!!!!! On Feb 2nd I had the horrible task of helping my mum move to a nursing home. On Feb 8th she toddled off to heaven to be with my dad again, 20 yrs is a long time to be apart. On 15th Feb we held her funeral (the day before her birthday) It was a good shindig with lots singing and stuff (wer'e Welsh) I then settled down to deal with all the stuff that comes after (licking me wounds etc) Some of you may be familiar with the newish pension accounts at the post office, my mums was solely used to stash her funeral money and grandchildrens inheritance as she called it. She was lucky enough to be able to leave it there and not draw on it whatsoever so you can imagine it soon mounted up, ( she had an income of £200 a week which is what she lived off lucky compared to some people) I duly filled in form after form so that I could release the money and carry out her wishes I had to provide birth certs & marr Certs for myself as well as a proof of address and a death cert for her. No problem sorted bank account still no probs. Mum reckoned there would be about Ten thousand by the time it would come to sort ( she knew she didn't have long not with cancer) Cheque came on Wed £300 It seems the local post office allowed one of her so called carers to systematically draw it without so much as a by your leave they have told me they thought it was strange but they did not question the man. Post Office rules state that to be able to do this they should fill in appropriate forms etc . So now were left with the grand sum of £300 pounds to pay for a funeral and wind up her estate. If anybody has rellies out there be they old or young take notice people are NOT what they appear to be. The police say theres not a lot they can do as they dont have a victim and the best they can hope for is that he confesses. PLEASE PLEASE DONT BE THE NEXT VICTIM OF SOMEONE LIKE THIS Please keep this nudged not for sympathy or empathy but for the reason You guys need to be aware that this sort of thing happens to you !!! We all think it happens to others and that it won't knock your door ................Well it DOES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take care all Claire xxx

Oh Claire sorry to hear that you have had such a turbalent month and lost you mam. And how horrid for someone to draw all that money out. My nan had one of the post office account things and had my dad as a second signatry, when we lost her my dad could still access the account to carry out nan's wishes. So far he has used the funds to fix up nan's house so that he and his sister can sell it, then everything left can be devided down the middle. If you were to put in a fraud claim for the missing money the PO may say that you mam must have given him her card and pin number for him to access the money. I do hope something good comes your way soon. (((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))

Perhaps a letter from a lawyer asking for details of all the spending he did on your mothers behalf, complete with receipts. A suggestion to all, make sure you have enduring powers of attorney, so that if anything happens to you somebody you trust can deal with your money etc.

I am very sorry Claire to learn of your mother's passing. It's shocking to read of that carer's greed and callousness, but the Post Office are responsible for giving out others' funds, and a system is in place to prevent things like this happening. When my dad was really ill my sister had to fill in forms etc. so she could pay his bills, it was never taken for granted that we could just take his pension, even being his daughters. Surely someone should be taken to task for this,it's just not right. His name will be known to his managers or bosses! can't believe the police cannot bring charges. Mau ((xx))

What an awful thing to happen!! As if you hadn't been through enough!! Is the Post Office able to tell you who did it?? Then you could see a solicitor!! Take care, Ails

Claire, so sorry you've lost your mum and a scumbag has added to your woes. Dare I suggest Citizens Advice Bureau. But I wouldn't let this drop. Rules are in place. The Post Office, if they haven't followed procedure, should be made answerable and the carer is NOT a friend of the family if he/she can do this to you and your mum. My thoughts are with you, Take care Caz xx ((hugs))

Hi Claire, I remember your original thread, I'm so sorry to hear your mum has been robbed in this way. My mum had a stroke last year and to access her card account I had to fill out a form and get it signed by her. Do you know if your mum actually did that for this 'carer', or do you think he forged her signature, or was he using mum's card? Either of the last 2 and surely he can be prosecuted for fraud. Can't believe that the police say there is no victim - that's just ridiculous! Surely at the time he drew the money out, your mother was still alive! Maybe you should get advice from a solicitor, or contact a more senior police officer and someone higher up in the post office? I'm sure the local paper would be interested in the police not following this up. I hope you get some justice. Maz. XX

So sorry this has happened to you.I work in sheltered housing and work alongside of carers. We do have a lovely bunch. They also safe guard themselves by telling any of us what money they have collected and what it was for. When i went for a caring job there was loads of restrictions.Think agency's do let us down though as i dont think they have the checks that we have.
