Mostly it does, Ann, but it only takes one that doesn't to cause chaos and panic. The zone is right by Coventry University and students aren't known for watching where they are going.

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 14 Apr 2013 17:39

Shared space in Ashford, Kent is often a nightmare.

I remember when they thought of extending it, the Guide Dogs for the Blind were drawing people's attention to the problems they found when their dogs were trying to work in the area.
Last week daughter and I drove slowly in the area and encountered 2 pedestrians hovering in the middle of a junction, big enough to house a reasonable roundabout in most situations.
They just didn't know where to go as there was no central 'refuge' and their destination shops were many metres ahead. We slowed right down, but as we approached they decided to go back to where they'd started on the other side of the road. They could do that, but less able people would have a long trek across that junction.

I just think that, if you haven't encountered it before you don't know what to do. I have seen pedestrians walk straight out in moving traffic not judging if the driver has time to stop, for heaven's sake it is not a magic circle. It actually isn't a very wide road but I think guide dogs must find it confusing, I haven't seen any though. It is the young children that worry me. You have a 3 year old, you teach them crossing a normal road then they watch you hovering right at the edge of the traffic willing it to stop. Oh and we always thank drivers who do stop, hoping bthat they will not mind stopping the next time. :-)

You know I had never heard of " Shared Space" until now,

and if I'd ventured into one, I am sure I would be confused, and Tom Tom likely would have had a seizure

edit

and that is, WITHOUT any effluence of the aforesaid " Incahol"
