I used to put leftover cat food out for hedgehogs. Slugs would gather to eat some as well so the hedgehogs had a starter and a main course.

Not to the extent you have seen, but still more in the garden than we've noticed in other years.

We planted a pot of Parsley which was decimated. The replacement is surrounded by wire (in case it was a 4 footed felon) and slug pellets. Every morning up to a dozen have been nuked :-D

Are they the lightish brown Spanish Armada variety or the typical UK black dog turd type? *shudders*

It's strange this year but I have not seen any.

Wet weather brings them out so it's hardly suprising there seems to be a lot. I suppose they skulk about in the undergrowth when it's not raining?

stacks in my garden - wonder if they are good for anything other than feeding birds - what purpose do they have in nature?

AnnMarieG Report 11 Jul 2012 10:27

We are inundated with the little blighters.I hate them,Snails as well.I have tried all the well known death penalties and am finding a coffee jar buried in the soil with cheap lager in is drowning quite a lot . ;-) ;-)

Island

Island Report 11 Jul 2012 10:53

AnnC, I think feeding the birds is their reason to be, nothing else just food chain. They make me gag but I wouldn't put salt on them (double gag, did it just once) in case it poisoned any birds.

Wend

Wend Report 11 Jul 2012 10:58

Apparently, they suffer a painful, lingering death if you put salt on them. I just cut them in half with a pair of scissors (a recommended quick death way to deal with them by my tutor at horticultural college.)
