About creating landfill.

At the supermarket this morning the young woman in front of us had 13 plastic bags. Some only had a couple of things in then she'd start a second. Time they started charging for them I think.

Hopefiully she was going to use them to line her rubbish bin but even that is not eco friendly although I could not bear to not have mine lined only because I would have to wash the bin out too much.

Here in wales if we want a carrier bag we have to
pay 5p for it .or 10p for a bag for life

Vera2010 Report 11 Jun 2012 15:26

I had numerous bags for life but have now upgraded to x 4 carrier bags costing about £2 each which will last me for ages. I never use the shop's thinner bags. I remember my mother always having one bag for the veg - straight into the bag from the greengrocer - and one for the groceries. We didn't have any black bin liners and I believe she had a bucket in the kitchen for kitchen rubbish. Edit. No that was for the coal

I prefer using my big bags rather than carriers.so much easier to pack stuff into.
I only use the plastic ones for meat/chicken or if I buy more than intended.

We always take our own big bags. And have to admit to using not wanted charity bags for bin bags.

we bought one of those large square green garden bags from B& Q its ideal cos I put it into the trolley at the check out and we load it up. I have a separate cools bag for the frozen goods and another Sainsbury silver insulated bag for the milk.
When we get to the car we hoist the bags into the boot and they are then easier to unload again when we get home.

I always get credited with using 10 bags at the checkout because of the sizes of the bags.

I think it is wrong that we should pay for carrier bags, I use the red white and blue canvas looking bags, there isn't any shop name on it and they are far better than the bag for life type, I also think that there should not be pre packed fruit and veg, and don't get me started on re-cycling at home.

Everyone should pay for carrier bags, they don't degrade and that will increase your council tax bills when they go into landfill as there is nothing else to do with them.

We have our own canvas bags as I refuse to advertise any shop for free.

Since charging has been the practise in Wales the car parks are less untidy as there are fewer empty plastic bags blowing around.

Carrier bags are just the same as any other commodity and any such item provided free will be abused

If your store/supermarket gave bread away for free i guarantee the amount thrown away would be similar to that of these carrier bags

When its free it has no value and people will always use more than they need to,

Even the most flimsy of these Free bags can be used more than once,

I often take these back to be refilled when i go for my next shop and any left over can be used for other things

As for the plastic packaging on food products such as fruit and veg, plastic is not compatible with storing these product and the quality will deteriorate far quicker than it should

Remember the brown paper carriers with the string handles? I think that we used to pay for them. We certainly used them more than once, and they were bio-degradeable

Much more eco-friendly than the plastic ones (Unless you know different!)

I loved the brown paper carriers. Used to get them in Sainsburys in the late 60's and they were so much easier for packing than the previous plastic ones I used to use. I don't recall re-using them but then I quess as paper they were probably biodegradable? I don't know why we moved onto plastic - perhaps cheaper.

I am fed up with OH bringing plastic carriers. I have cotton bags (washable) and a beauty made at the local chaple green with a big ladybird on it. I get very annoyed about the amount of charity bags pushed through my letterbox. I take my stuff to the charity shops myself as I know the charity really does benefit and the collectors do not. My sister found some of her bagged stuff on our local market?

i am a checkout operator and have to ask people if they have their own bags before we put them out. the usual answer is - yes, they are in the car!
my favourite answer is - what do i want bags for? (err, to take your shopping home in?, i dont say this, but it is what i am thinking.)
the best answer last week was - no i havn't got my bags, i don't look after the enviroment because the enviroment does not look after me! i didnt know what to say except ok!
i could write a book on the excuses peope give as to why they have not got their bags.
