There's a book called "Lock Stock and Barrel" out of print but sometimes available on Amazon...full of origins of phrases such as the title i.e. the components of a flintlock gun..the "lock"...the handle "stock" and barrel....i.e. "in it's entirety".

My favourite was the meaning of Threshold. In the middle ages houses were floored with chopped straw known as Thresh which was strewn a few inches deep and swept out periodically. To prevent it prematurely spilling out, a plank called a THRESH HOLD was placed at the doors. Ta Da..
