There's a book called "Lock Stock and Barrel" out of print but sometimes available on Amazon...full of origins of phrases such as the title i.e. the components of a flintlock gun..the "lock"...the handle "stock" and barrel....i.e. "in it's entirety".

My favourite was the meaning of Threshold. In the middle ages houses were floored with chopped straw known as Thresh which was strewn a few inches deep and swept out periodically. To prevent it prematurely spilling out, a plank called a THRESH HOLD was placed at the doors. Ta Da..

The Spanish have hundreds of phrases known as Dichos or Refranos as they tend to Rhyme and are wise and humorous:

Gato Maullador, Poco Cazador. (The cat that Mews doesn't hunt)

El Agua para los Bueys y el Vino para los Reyes. (Water for Oxen, Wine for Kings)

El Bobo si es callado, por sesudo es reputado. (The dummy who is silent is reputed to be clever)

Quien Rie el ultimo Rie mejor - "He who laughs last, laughs longest!"

Common pub signs: Cerveza Gratis, MaƱana (go on work it out! ) LOL.
