I thought of this thread, when I saw an article about this on TV this morning. The fields there ( Northumberland? ) were still bright yellow, some fields near here barely have any flowers left.

Like Ingrid, OH and I were wondering what the yellow fields were.

Sorry they cause problems for some, to us they looked absolutely beautiful :-D.

When they first became widespread in farms I was critical of the look - but now I see them as a regular indicator of summer, and a lovely splash of colour - like daffodils are for spring.

And yes, here in Northumberland they are in full colour!

And I think I heard they are a valuable healthy oil like olive oil - not just as I once thought only for stock feed - anyone know the truth of that?

SHMBO suffers from hay fever.
I got into trouble the other day when we went past a field of rape and I said "It's OK, the gate is closed".

One cultivar of rapeseed is called Canola ................ and Canola is now the only cultivar grown in Canada

................ and that is grown for its oil for human consumption

Unfortunately, it was produced by genetic engineering, and well over 80% of the canola grown in the 3 Prairie provinces are now GM

Canola oil is one of the healthiest oils to use, better than sunflower oil or others, except olive oil.

I've used canola oil for many years.

It is absolutely fantastic to drive or take the train across the Prairies in July and see miles and miles of bright yellow.

The only problem is that the seeds are herbicide-resistant, so if seeds are blown out of the fields and get established in ditches or in other fields, they cannot be eradicated.
