One cultivar of rapeseed is called Canola ................ and Canola is now the only cultivar grown in Canada

................ and that is grown for its oil for human consumption

Unfortunately, it was produced by genetic engineering, and well over 80% of the canola grown in the 3 Prairie provinces are now GM

Canola oil is one of the healthiest oils to use, better than sunflower oil or others, except olive oil.

I've used canola oil for many years.

It is absolutely fantastic to drive or take the train across the Prairies in July and see miles and miles of bright yellow.

The only problem is that the seeds are herbicide-resistant, so if seeds are blown out of the fields and get established in ditches or in other fields, they cannot be eradicated.

SHMBO suffers from hay fever.
I got into trouble the other day when we went past a field of rape and I said "It's OK, the gate is closed".

Ours is normally harvested first week in July, may be slightly later this year x x

When they first became widespread in farms I was critical of the look - but now I see them as a regular indicator of summer, and a lovely splash of colour - like daffodils are for spring.

And yes, here in Northumberland they are in full colour!

And I think I heard they are a valuable healthy oil like olive oil - not just as I once thought only for stock feed - anyone know the truth of that?

Like Ingrid, OH and I were wondering what the yellow fields were.

Sorry they cause problems for some, to us they looked absolutely beautiful :-D.

I thought of this thread, when I saw an article about this on TV this morning. The fields there ( Northumberland? ) were still bright yellow, some fields near here barely have any flowers left.

lol Mersey. I'm going to finish off the hooch in my last few minutes. Go out in a Techniclour Bang.

I've suggested to my wife that when I die, I do not want to be cremated. I'd probably cause the crematorium to explode and be accompanied to the Pearly Gates by thirty or so poor, innocent, souls.

Drinking hooch is bad for your health but I really shouldn't let it affect so many others, many of whom will have gone to pay their final respects, while others will just want too confirm the fact of my passing before continuing the celebrations :-D :-D :-D

Allan never give up your hooch lol....

Ponders on what I sould do in my last few minutes :-D ;-)

The end of the world is nigh!!

For is't not written in some obscure Holy Book that when the flowers look less than full, and there be signs of dying off, then shall the Four Horsemen of the Apostrophe be unleashed.

Death, riding a steed of white, shall strike all those lands to the West which covet the Rapeseed Counties.

Famine shall strike all those who liketh not the Rapeseed.

War shall erupt, like teenage acne, between those who have the Rapeseed and those who negleteth such a crop

Pestilence shall not be mounted on a Steed, but will travel via the airwaves from computer to computer. Facebook shall be as badly affected as it shares. Twitter shall cease, and Tweet be reduced to a muted squeak.

Thus shall the world end, but a new World shall arise, Phoenix like, from the ashes of despair.....

....And I'm going to have to stop drinking my home distilled hooch :-D

Yesterday's vision was merely about an army of 3 metre long cockroaches clothed in garments of purple and gold :-D :-D

Glad it's solved the mystery for you Ingrid lol

I noticed yesterday that the flowers looked a bit less full than before...and i can definitely see signs it's dying off...my nose and throat aren't feeling the benefit yet but the end is certainly in sight x

Actually, Huia, I don't have one. I used the phrase to introduce some literary melodrama.

I am still on the original coal-fired desk top.

At least the ash is good in the garden :-D

Allan, I dont think there are such things as laptops these days. I have been watching the ads, and I see no mention of such things. Of course you might be old-fashioned enough to have one from the stone age.

Allan

Allan Report 25 May 2012 23:57

Still sounds scary, and I'm not sure where the front door is. Will I need sunglasses to counter the glare of the sunlight? and can I take my laptop with me?

supercrutch Report 25 May 2012 23:46

Allan, there is, there is - you have to open your door first and then stick a foot out, then the other. The sunlight makes you squint for a while but when you get used to it you meet lots of normal people who don't even know what an RRer is :-D

It's fun :-D :-D :-D :-D
