I have a tree on GR.

I did it so that I could find out more about my ancestors.

Each time I add another person to my tree it tells me how many matches there are with other members.

I can then write to them to see if we have a connection and swap information.

I was very lucky to be in contact with someone who had a photo of my grandmother when she was only 21 and it has become a most prized possession.

I think I started tree climbing because I didn't have many relatives in Australia (my parents emigrated to Oz when I was 12).... and that started me wondering how many of "my" family stayed at home and how many emigrated...... and where did they all go? As well as finding my ancestors and a bit about their lives, I have huge branches in my tree - a jungle of cousins!

My father's sister also came to Oz, a couple of years after us,but that meant only one cousin here.

So now I am in contact with cousins all over the world. We send emails regularly; we swap photographs (old and new), tell jokes, have fun..... and I've met a few of them.

Next plan is a trip to New Zealand to meet my grandfather's sister's grandchildren. :-D

And today...... I made contact with an 8th cousin.... in Kalgoorlie!

I often wonder what I did before I started all this......... ?

?
AS the site logo suggests.....

Genes--------Reunited......

or the old version-----------Genes Connected,(which I did prefer)as many dont get *reunited *in the true sense.

Its to try and link with others who share a genetic line/s, mind some by the passing of years and interlinks do get watered down. :-D :-D :-D :-D.

i joined because at that time i was new to genealogy and it was the best site at that time to get very good and accurate info (from the members) with plenty of even better advice

Good morning Mr Herbert

I am not here to be found. My Dad died when I was 6yrs and even though I can remember every detail about him and the day he died, I never got the chance to ask him any thing about his parents or up bringing or his family history. He had one remaining brother and sister, my aunt and uncle and they could give me a few details.
My Dad was born in India as My Grandad was a serving solider and they moved around alot, his siblings were born around the UK, so I began with only his birthcert, and off I went on my journey of discovery and never looked back, found a shed load of family secrets and laid old myths to dealth, still not completed and I dont think my tree ever will be unless I am able to bulid a time machine. :-D

John, welcome to the boards. You will in time, get used to other peoples sense of humour. This site is also used by people for conversation, aswell as geneology, so it is not always the serious stuff. Ask any questions you like re geneology, and I am sure someone will be able to help you.

Welcome

Julia in Derbyshire

Hi John....

I originally came on here to look for a relative on my mothers side, finding any little bits of information I could, unfortuntaley I didnt when I first started as I was looking for someone who was deceased, after making a few mistakes I took abreak away then come back with a more positive attitude and was to find within days that the relative I was looking for was alive and well and also looking for my mother, although she did not have alot of information......

We are now in constant contact and also it has opened up so many more branches to our family tree......

Long may it continue........ :-D

Hi John

I started with GR way back, basically as somewhere to put my tree.
There were so many black holes and mysteries and have been lucky enough to solve a lot of them.

After finding the boards I became a full member to correspond with others and started another tree. I haven't looked back since. The search still goes on.

The site isn't perfect but the help given on the boards IS
:-D :-D :-D

I was a member of friends reunited and saw the advert for this site when it first started - Nov 5th 2002. I joined Nov 8th and have been here ever since. When I joined I didn't actually know what the site was for but having been doing my tree for about 20 years at that time it seemed like a good idea to get some information or help.

Since then I have had contact with several 2nd cousins and we have shared information and photos. We have all learnt a lot from each other especially about family stories about the bad uns ;-)

At one time I used to do a lot of research for others and I really enjoyed finding things. It was as exciting as if it was my tree!

So welcome to the boards and good luck with your research. Have fun! :-D

Welcome John

I joined this site when a distant cousin sent me details of my dad's family, I went to school with my cousin and my nanna said that we were related. I got a lot of help and advice fron other members and have been to a couple of meets in London which was great fun and lovely to put names to faces.

I have been in contact with new family and found a few skeletons lol

I have since started my mother's side

Happy hunting

Iris Report 23 Apr 2012 15:20

hi john ,
i started because i knew next to nothing about my fathers family , but oh boy, have i learnt a lot in the past 6 years .my father never spoke of his family ,apart from once when i asked his mothers name , he did tell me , (she died 12 years before my birth)he also said she had 2 sisters....one of whom lived just 1/2 an hours walk away from us ,and i never met her once in her life (info from death cert) he also had a1/2 brother ,i didn't know that until my teens.
i think he didn't say much , because my mother did not like his family ,and he liked a quite life , but by being like that he robbed me of being able to talk to people who knew my gran ,and could have told me about her , family has always meant a lot to me (i am a only child ).
