Have always wanted to do my family tree but I was working full time and never seemed to have the time. Then ten years ago I moved here to north Tenerife where if living here permanently speaking Spanish is necessary. I didn't know any Spanish at all so wasn't involved in much locally. I shared my time between my family tree and learning Spanish and I am pleased to say they are both progressing very well.

DISCUSS

harrumph! :-D :-D

I DO hope that you are taking great care with contacting those you have been told are your half-siblings.

They may well not have been told anything about you, and so a message from you will come as a very great shock.

Did you take any advice on HOW to approach family members???

Although I haven't updated by tree on here for some years, I first joined after helping my youngest on a Summer holiday project.

We knew a fair bit about my mother's side, but not much on my father's. I also am an only child. This site was the ideal vehicle to record what we did know (all of 6 people and 2 generations!) hoping that a relative might make contact/be contactable

Even though no contact was made with close relatives, one of the Hotmatches threw up a member who had all 6 people on his extended tree. Suddenly we know we were not alone :-D

Welcome to the GR boards, John.

I had always intended to do my family history but never got around to it.
My Dad died, and I lost my job within the same month, and suddenly I had a lot of free time on my hands. My Dad had always been the one who told us about our family's history, so I decided that it was a great time to research it.I have found out many interesting things about both sides of my family, some skeletons, and found out more about things like the Scottish Clearances, the Irish Potato Famine, the Australian Gold rushes
during the 1850's and 1860's,and the reasons why my ancestors, and my OH's,emigrated to Australia when they did.

I have made many contacts through GR,and even met up with some cousins.I stayed with my 5th cousin in the UK when I went on a holiday there, and her family took me around to their favourite places , and I was treated like a queen. We still are in regular email contact, and are good friends.

I joined GR because I wanted to find out my family origins, and wanted somewhere to put my tree, and I have done that. The help, support and advice that I have received since joining GR and finding the boards has been fantastic, no other site comes anywhere near it.If you need help, get stuck on anything, etc, you only need to ask and the wonderful people on here will go out of their way to help you.

Best of luck with finding the rest of your family.

Best wishes, Margot. :-) :-D

Sylvia, re 'Discuss'. That's why I mentioned Digital Spy (forums) because some on there end their posts with 'discuss' which I find very pompous!!!

Prickles in light of being told to discuss, I would have preferred to discuss the discus - especially the one lobbed by Hampshires finest.
Discus. :-D :-D
