Who is going to be watching yet another version of this story, albiet this time by Julian Fellows of Downton.
There looks to be some good actors and actresses in it., and promises to reveal the truth.

Dermot Report 25 Mar 2012 10:48

My cousin has just had her book published.

I have't read it yet but I understand it concerns her paternal great-grandfather who worked as a Shipwright on the doomed Titanic.

Silly Sausage Report 25 Mar 2012 11:05

Nah like Sheila I already now the ending, it still gets up my nose that all the 3rd class passagers died because they were poor and the 1st class women that remained on the ship to let others off ,were deemed somewhat heros ...so I will be giving it a miss

Morning ladies :-D

Foggy if we are speaking of the film Titanic with Leonardo in it - that was so far removed from the truth.

The best and most accurate account is 'A Night to Remember' with Kenneth More in it. Has now been re-released in colour.

Hayley and Julia, I shall be watching it in order to confirm that Fellowes is narrating the truth - too often it is skated over re 3rd class passengers.

I began reading about the Titanic circa 1985 when I discovered OH's uncle was a 3rd class passenger. I was horrified to read and could not believe that the 3rd class were kept locked below and denied access to the upper decks.

Lifeboats went off with as little as 12 persons in them - crew and 1st class - one woman managed to take her luggage and her dog. I contacted the President of the Titanic Society who had written many books about this ship and asked was it true re the 3rd class. It was. The reason being if the 3rd class had been allowed to mix with the 2nd and 1st class on deck during the cruise then come to landing at N. York - ALL would have had to undergo the indignity of going through Ellis Island and all its procedures. The gates were shut, chained and padlocked.

The kitchen staff (Italian) thought to be volatile were (for reasons of safety) locked in the kitchens and drowned.

Channel 5 last week showed an excellent (in my mind) portrayal of the the tragedy from the viewpoint of Engineers/Stokers/Boilermen - all of whom perished and it did, indeed, show the locked gates.

A friend of mine just yesterday asked did I know that when surviving crew arrived in N York they were no longer paid by White Star Line. I was able to tell her that as of the time the Titanic sank - they would no longer be paid but that this was common practise then and for many years amongst the various shipping lines worldwide.

Many bodies were recovered and interred in Nova Scotia, unidentified. However there is a list on internet of them with sex, age, details of clothing, jewellery, belongings and tattoos. Had this been released to the public then perhaps some could have been identified.

Sorry if I have gone on.....................

Caroline Report 25 Mar 2012 20:07

We actually saw the first one this week here in Canada, it's not bad. I might have fallen asleep a few times because there were a couple of times when I thought "Oh that's strange where was that going" or "Did I miss something"....I'm assuming all will become clearer over the weeks.
It is taken into account all aspects of life rich; poor; workers etc.
After the first one I'm wondering though how much they'll stretch the other weeks out, as they've covered alot in this one.........
