This is something I have never wanted to watch either on film or tv - watching people struggling for their lives and of course the women, children and 1st class passengers first. It would make me boil.

Glad to help. Some mysteries will never be solved.

Thanks very much Chris for all the info. It's a really interesting subject, and I can't get out of my mind all the people who died and were affected by it. I'm going to go to the library and borrow the books you have mentioned.
Thanks again - you've been a big help.

ChrisofWessex Report 12 Apr 2012 20:02

Jan as promised - in the beginning I read several books. however three have stuck with me. A survivor Lawrence Beesley he was English and a teacher wrote very quickly in the summer of 1912 'The Loss of the SS Titanic'.
Another survivor was Col. Archibald Gracie an Amercian who died at year end of 1912 and his book was published posthumously in 1913 'The Truth about the Titanic'. From memory I believe that both these men were on the ship until the end - one certainly, if not both, went down in the sea only to pop up like a cork from a bottle. At least they were there and experienced the tragedy.

I cannot recall the exact heading but it was an account of the Board of Trade's Public Enquiry into the loss of RMS Titanic. Lord Mersey summing up stated that the ship was travelling too fast amongst ice floes but did not attach any blame to the White Star Line. There appeared to be lots of whitewash and over the years have come stories of crew survivors being told what to say. You have to make up your own mind whether this is true or false

A Mr Harbinson was appointed to represent the 3rd class passengers who perished and basically he says there was no discrimination etc. He appeared by the length of his statement to be on the side of the shipping co rather than that of the pasengers.

I borrowed all three books through ordering from my local library.

Forget any films re Titanic especially the last one but for the truth get 'A night to remember'. When this was made, survivors were still alive and as a result this film is as true as it gets.

Hope this is of help.

Chris of wessex,
I'm very interested in the Titianic too, and am going to buy a book about it. Just wondering if you could recommend which book I should buy, as you seem to have read lots of books about it.

He has just come back in Julia (for the second time today) doubt if he will go out again! Thank you for info.

We have had heating back on past couple of days - even had gas fire on as well.

Julia Report 7 Apr 2012 13:52

Chris - so bloomin' cold and miserable here today, that I have turned the heating on, and sent the OH up the street to get me a copy of today's Times, to sit and do the crossword.
Lo and behold, apart from the crossword and some very scrummy recipes using chocolate, there is a pull out and keep edition of the paper 100 years ago today, which is all about the Titanic, and gives a list of some of the passengers.
So, send your OH out straight away, to get a copy.
By the way, I will reply to your PM over the holiday.

Personally Caroline I always felt that Ismay should shoulder a lot of the blame leading up to the collision.

He was shown to be somewhat unsure as to what he should do...couldn't make his mind up whether to use the lifeboats yet or not...like he was in shock. Some might think that didn't show him in as good a light as History shows him.

Just caught up on last night's episode. Well so far Julian Fellowes (in my opinion) is doing as he said and keeping to the truth and ignoring the myths. Other aspects from different viewpoints should be coming up and wait with interest to see the wireless operators.

Not sure what Caroline is referring to re Capt.Smith.

Well just to say this weeks show will be about the same as last weeks, so if you hated it last week you'll hate it this week.
They fill in some gaps that I thought I'd missed last week.
They do jump backwards and forwards with the story, but you can still follow it.
I can see some people being upset at the way the Captain is protrayed this week...............
Other than that the only thing I can tell you for sure without ruining it for you....is the ship sinks !!....but not this week....

Caroline

Caroline Report 26 Mar 2012 18:53

I'll let you know if I remember to watch it on Wednesday night (I think it is) !!
I'll have to watch the DVD to catch the bits I missed, as OH couldn't watch it.

I have a piece to add to this, but must do the lunch for us both, and have a break. Not easy to post on here today, so I'll post when and if the problems clear. It will be of particular interest to you Chris.

Agree with Caroline, wonder how they will stretch the next three episodes, as alot covered in the first.
Found the narration in the background unnecessary and a bit intrusive. On the whole, i wasnt overly impressed.
I cant comment on the accuracy, as i am not familiar with it. My son said it follows the theme of the film so far.

Sue :-)

Rambling Report 25 Mar 2012 22:28

It didn't grip me, I have a feeling that because it is evidently going to be lots of flash backs (and forward) to different parts of the story it will lose impetus, and be hard to care much about any of the 'characters'? I think a linear story builds the characters better and also the overall sense of panic.

But will watch next week and see.
