hello peeps, i have had a dreadful two weeks as my daughter who is 14 collasped at home two weeks ago last wed. i couldnt wake her in the morning and she was mottled and cold.

i immediately tel for the doctor, told him the symptons and he arrived within 10 mins followed by an ambulance. i thought she was dehyrated as her eyes were sunken but couldnt think what was wrong.

the paramedics could only just find a vein and her temp was only 34c and her skin mottled and awful.because we were 30 mins from the nearest hospital, they transported us to a nearby car park 2 miles away and the helicopter coastguard landed and we were flown in 6 mins. by this time she was in a coma and fighting for her life.

after doing several bloods and tests etc, they realised she was ina diabetic coma and her blood sugar was 60!

unable to keep her as our hospital doesnt have an icu only a hdu, she was put on a life support machine and the air ambulance flew us to a hospital in glasgow.

she was in icu unconscious for 6 days and finally opened her eyes briefly on tues last.wed they finally took her off the ventilator and what a relief. they didnt know if she would be brain damaged but she was sleepy for another 2 days before she awaoke.

hse then transferred to another ward until today when we flew back here this afternoon. it all seems like a bad dream and as i write this, it still doesnt seem as if it happened.

she has lost 2 1/2 stone and is very weak but within a few weeks hope to have her back to school.

she is managing to do her own thumb pricks and insulin jags everyday which is marvellous.

so tonight looking forward to my own bed and a good nights sleep, have forgotten what that is.

so take folks
keep you posted

What a nightmare. You must have been worried sick.

Had she been diagnosed as diabetic before she became ill?

Glad you are all back home and hope she continues to get better and better.

So sorry to hear of this Florence.
What a worry, especially as you had to be flown to the mainland and were far from home.
I'm glad your daughter has improved now and hope she will soon make a full recovery.

Horrendous and worse still that you have to stand by helpless as you cannot help.

Never mind worst is over now and thank goodness for that and she is safe at home with you all. A happy ending.

thanks everyone for you kind words and thoughts.
shirley, no she has been healthy since she was cleared of caner in 2008.only signs recently was she was drinking a lot, but she does normally. other than that no other signs apparent.

she had gone through a growth spirt and lost about 3/4 stone, which she was happy about. but now the doctors say this was all linked and her age being 14 and hormonal is when diabetes can start, just one of those things.

have just done her bloods and sugar is 6.3 which is fine just now. she was nearly asleep, just exhausted.bless her.

Oh my Florence .even more of a worry when you had no idea what was wrong.

Hopefully when she stabilises completely she may be able to come off the injections and control the diabetes by diet.

Hope you can all get a good nights sleep tonight and start refreshed tomorrow.

take care

Ooo Florence, I'm sorry to hear that. She's being such a brave girl taking on her tests and jabs by herself, but it's a good thing. Only she can tell where her diabetes is going, and only she can really manage it.

I'm glad she's out of it now, it's onwards and upwards from here. This won't stop her and nor should it.
