What meat are you going to have for your Christmas Dinner.???
I ask this because, I have been traditional for years and always had a 'bird'
The OH and I went a couple of weeks ago to order a Goose, and when we got there, I could see the OH was positively drooling over a piece of beef. When I asked if he would rather have that than a bird, he nearly passed out with shock.
So, we're having a Rib of Beef Joint, already in the freezer ready to be cooked.

Julia, we are having a turkey, although Alun would prefer to have beef, he isn't too keen on poultry at all. My problem is that the rest of the family including myself like to have turkey for Christmas, so I also have a small piece of beef ( his favourite ) for Alun. Otherwise it doesn't seem fair that he can't have his favourite meat for Christmas dinner.lol!!

Love, Sallie.

Always have had goose for nearly 40 years - however - earlier this year - had a Gressingham duck and it was delicious. So after a vote taken by all 3 who will be dining - we have a Gressingham duck, a 5 lb leg of lamb for Boxing Day (at the price of lamb this is a treat) and an 8 lb ham which will begin to be eaten on Christmas Eve! All safely in freeezer ready to be cooked by OH.

Capon disappeared late 60s/early 70's - something to do with how they were raised - on the human consumption side rather than animal welfare.

A capon is a desexed rooster I believe.
We have had turkey and trimmings, hot ham and stuffed loin of pork, roast veges with Christmas pudding for years at my daughters place with her in laws present.
Nothing unusual about that you are probably thinking except that in Perth, W.A. it is summert and last year the temperature was abominable, well over forty degrees. Not the climate for an English Christmas dinner.
This year we are having a selection of different kinds of sausages, salad and we haven't decided what else but it won't be hot.
I suggested a ham sandwich but the in-laws wouldn't have been in that.
Afterwards the family usually spend the afternoon in their swimming pool.

Sharron

Sharron Report 8 Dec 2011 13:52

My treat was always a Sainsbury's vegetables in cream sauce pie which had a lovely short crust. Then they improved it and gave it a flaky crust which stopped it being my Christmas treat as it was not much cop. When they improved them again and gave them rosemary flavoured pastry I stopped eating them altogether.

It will probably be vege sausage and bacon ad well but with copious amounts of stuffing and bread sauce which is what Christmas is all about for me.

We are on our own this year and have decided to repeat what we did three years ago. I will cook the turkey and gammon dinner with all the trimmings on Christmas eve. Then Christmas day late lunch will be pate andcheese and biscuits etc. Our Christmas evening meal will be all the cold meats, cheese, breads, pickles etc and mince pies
Boxing day will be beef followed by Christmas pudding.

By the time we have eaten our way through the Christmas dinner, and all the courses, we don't have room for anything else in the evening but perhaps a bag of crisps.
Boxing Day, I do not cook. We have such as home made pate, cooked ham, nibbly things, breads, cheeses, etc.
Everything that needs to be made, is already done and in the freezer, even my veggies, with the exception of the roast potatoes.
As you know I am liable to slip away from home for a few days, at the drop of a hat, and I like to be prepared.
New Year's weekend, I have already bought a Leg of Lamb, and as Chris in Wessex said, with the cost these days, it is a rare treat.

Beef Wellington, but I'll be cooking up in advance a bought rolled half turkey breast for sandwiches later on in the day.

One year we had small lobsters - they were on offer and only 3 people were at home, and another Steak and Kidney suet pudding.

Probably turkey, cos I like it, but it has to be a whole one as I like the leg meat. The butcher gets them from a local farm and they are always good. However we are in complete chaos as we are having the kitchen renovated so it could be beans on toast!!! And from 9 of us, it went to 7, and now looks like it will be 6 - even that as in doubt as it depends on the weather.
