Talk about chaos - one year the main oven thermostat chose 25 Dec to pack up. Luckily the turkey had been cooked, carved and frozen before hand. Even so, it was a bit of a struggle trying to re-heat that and cook the trimmings in a tiny top grill/ one shelf oven!

I'm with you Sheila, prefer the leg meat when hot. breast is fine cold. Which is why it is not so good when we go to son's as they have a crown.

One year we had just put the turkey in when we had a power cut. The main sub station was just outside our house. When the man was trying to fix it people kept going up to him and moaning and were told in no uncertain terms that he wanted his dinner too. We were on our own so opened the cava and waited. Finally had our meal about three pm.

Yet again it will be Turkey. :-S.If it was just me it would be Roast Beef, but the rest of the family would be most upset if we didn't stick to tradition.I bought a Bronze Turkey (half price ) in Tes**.I would never pay the full price for a Bronze.
Boxing day is all cold meats, salads, cheeses ,pates french bread etc.Just Buffet style. Not sure how many people will be here Boxing Day.It could be 8.But 5 on Xmas Day.

I would love it if someone cooked Christmas Dinner for me for a change :-D

Sallie and Jane, it can get worse than that. I actually WORKED one Christmas Day, serving everyone else's dinner.
When the children were young, I took what work I could get. This particular time I was Silver Service Waitressing at a country pub in a village. Sallie, you may have seen it. It is in the village of Wessington on the way to Matlock, from Alfreton. The big white pub that stand crossways to the road.
Well, Christmas morning, we all got up, though not feeling all that well. I opened the presents with the children, 4 born in four and a half years, so they were all very young at the time. Some managed abit of breakfast, others were not bothered. Come 10.00, I had to go to work. In those days, you were responsible for 'dressing' your dining room, so you had to make a good start.
I can't remember how many sat down for the meal, probably getting on for 100, over 2 sittings, and all Silver Service. We finished at 4.00. and I went home. When I got in, everybody looked like death warmed up, sniffling and coughing, and I didn't feel that great.
The OH of the time, had been left cooking the dinner, and it was just about ready, when I asked who wanted what to eat. Nobody, including myself, wanted anything. We all felt so poorly.
Well, the dogs fed well that Christmas, if nobody else did at my house.
Until this last few years, the present OH and I, have gone out for the Christmas meal, local to where we live, but the place changed hands, the standard went down, and now the place is closed.
Oh well, I suppose we are all lucky to have a Christmas dinner, no matter whose cooking and serving it.

Yes that's true Julia, we have to be grateful and lucky that we have Christmas dinner....many people in the world would be happy with what we all have.

Still it would sometimes be nice to get spoilt a bit.lol!!

I hope no one does what my friend did one year , they had put the diner on the table for people to help themselves and popped the cork on a bottle which sent the cork up ......it smashed into the light sending glass bulb all over their diners !!!!
They couldn't eat any of it ,and ended up with a cold Christmas diner .

Sallie

Sallie Report 8 Dec 2011 18:35

Oh dear, thank goodness that has never happened here.lol!! I feel sorry for your friend that cooked the dinner, all that work of cooking it and then to end up with a cold dinner in the end.

It was a Fluorescent tube !!! not just a small light bulb !!
That tube lighting is nasty stuff to clean up , the tubes have a powder in them.
I did feel sorry for her when she told me as it was a big family diner !!

Well ive got my eye on two wood pigeons that frequent my garden, they pinch all food i put out for the other birds. They then walk about with a smug smile on there faces as if to say im full up, little do they know what fate is coming there way.

PS can anyone tell how you would cook these :-D

Good Morning George of Westbury,
I think those damned 'Woodies' must be flying between mine and yours, as I also have a pair. Perhaps the're at one house, then go to the other for 'seconds, becuase this pair are as big as bald eagles
As to cooking them, off the top of me 'ead, I would suggest a bottle of full bodied red, and loads of shallots. If you pluck and draw 'em, I'll cook 'em

Our four can barely waddle across the lawn - look more like the size of chickens - keep chasing them off.

OK I am really not looking forward to our turkey now. We wnt To S********s because our T***o only had Bernard M Turkeys and I won't buy their meat. We only wanted a really small bird as we didn't want to freeze left overs or waste it and it cost the same for our small bird as a much larger one. OK I know that is not unusual with turkey. What I am now upset about is, having bought a taste the difference one, I have just read a tasting report in the DM and S's only scored 2 out of 10 for their turkey when cooked. I had initially said we'd go to Wai**** but our only one is a trek away so we didn't. They scored 9 out of 10 for theirs, all the rest were much lower except M&S who scored 8.

All I can hope for is it was their cooking!!!

And.... This afternoon the lights went on the fully decorated tree, they had been up there for 4 days. :-( :-( :-( :-(

Sparkling Ann, I am sure it will be okey. Don't forget, those ratings are only someones opinion. How often have you had something to eat, and thought it was nice, and yet someone else eating the same thing, can say they did not like it.
Make plenty of stuffing, and sausage and bacon rolls.
Enjoy
