If you have a library card go to your local library site and look for the Genealogy Databases. In there should be 19th century british newspapers, there is a lot of info in them that you won't find anywhere else.

Join your local family history group if money is tight Ours charge £12 a year 1 2 good lectures a year plus free acess to ancestry and find my past on the societys computers .Plus cds fiche etc how they break even i dont know .

I have only downloaded the one on genes but couldn't believe all the info I found on it even all children including children that had died so sad and the head of the households signiture

What a wonderful insight into life within households these census records bring :-D

There seems to be some confusion about prices and what you can get in each subscription on Genes, so I just wanted to clarify a few things.

A Platinum subscription on Genes Reunited will give you unlimited access to all of our Census records including 1911 as well as the fully indexed BMD's and WW1 and WW2 military death records. You can choose from a 1 month subscription (£19.95), 6 month (£49.95) and 12 month (£79.95). Don't forget that a Platinum subscription also allows you to post on the boards, send messages and view other members trees if you have permission. We have also added a previous and next button to the 1911 can scroll through the census pages.

Ancestry do not yet have the 1911 census indexed. You can only search the summary pages and then scroll through looking for the record you are after.

If you prefer pay-per-view, you can but 50 credits for £5.00 or 200 credits for £17.95. All of the records are priced differently ranging from 1 credit for WW1 death records to 30 credits for the 1911 census image (this also includes the summary page). The rates charged for each record depend on the commission we have to pay the record owner or the cost to us for transcribing the millions of records in each data set.

We are still the cheapest option if you want the sharing of trees and contact centre plus all censuses including 1911.

Braken, Ancestry should have full transcription of the 1911 census by next month but you can search it at the moment - it is a bit longwinded though.

has an article headed "Using the 1911 Census" which explains how to use the Summary Books to find the images. As well as the info it says to note down, also note the schedule no and then when you have brought up the images, multiply the schedule no by 2 and put that into the box next to "image" and click on the Go button. You may have to go backwards or forwards a couple of times to find the correct family.

It sounds complicate, but after you have done it a couple of times, it is quite easy.

There are lots of willing helpers with subs to the major sites to assist you. :-D

I don't know if you know but Ancestry is free in the libary but I can't get the info on the 1911 census on Ancestry that I did on genes

Probably best to go to Ancestry....:)
l have now, paid for a month at the moment.
l just love looking at census pages as well as finding the info ll need:)

I have only used it once before when genes gave me 30 credits and I downloaded 1 entry of the 1911 census

The Sharp's come in as Elizabeth Craven my granmother married Frederick Sharp in 1925 Norton , Stockton-on-tees he was born in Willington Durham 1/04/1899

I have Elizabeth's father Joseph 1869 Kingston married Lavinia 29/09/1889 St Silas Sculcoates

His father Joseph I have as a fisherman (Captain on one census) but different census give different places of birth so not sure I have 1837 married a Catherine not sure of her surname in 1868 Kingston

Hi Carol,

I notice that one of the surnames you are researching is Sharp. If the marriage that Shane found to Thomas Smith is correct for Lavinia, then it is possible that Thomas died (perhaps in the war) and that she married a third time as there is this marriage:-
