Helen,

You may be better off send for the marriage cert in Leslie H Oddy's name then you will get the right one.

Because on the Yorkshire BMD site the marriage for Vera is registered in both Geldart and Brown.

Hopefully this is now rectified :-) x

Helen Report 9 Apr 2011 12:23

Got the marriage certificate this morning. It was the correct one. It appears she changed her name by deed to Geldart. She lied on her wedding certificate saying she was 31yrs old, when she was 39yrs old and her husband was 24yrs old, so could well still be alive! I can't believe she married someone 4yrs older than her own son!!! Unbelievable! Don't know the witnesses to the marriage, I'm assuming they must've been friends of theirs.

Thank you all so much for your help
Helen

That's great news. Whomever registered her death obviously knew her real date of birth though.

Who was the informant on the death cert?

Helen Report 9 Apr 2011 21:55

I looked up the informant on 192.com and rang him. He's a solicitor. He said the name rang a bell and he was sure there must be a file about her in his office. He told me to email him my contact details which I did. He replied saying he was going to send my information onto someone who knew Vera more than he did and I might hear back from them. I haven't yet, but it's only been a few days.

Mum told Dad the information we had on Vera and I'm hoping his outward reaction is the same as his inward one. If that makes sense. I don't want this to upset him. He was shocked (as I was) that she married someone only 4yrs older than him.

I wonder if there's a post 1950s census I could look at, to work out if she had any other children. The solicitor said that because he was on her death certificate as informant, it would suggest there wasn't any other family members.

If her husband died, I should be able to find that with the information I have. It'll be weird if he's still alive! :-O

Not seeing a death for Leslie. I wonder what happened to him? What was her marital status when she died?

Did the solicitor say anything about her will?

Due to privacy laws the latest census you can access is the 1911.

She was still married when she died, as he's on the death certificate as her husband.

The solicitor didn't mention anything about his files at all. She would've left everything to her husband anyway, which I'm relieved about, as I was worried we might inherit a debt! haa haa!

You can search for people on 192.com, but I'm not sure whether he stayed in Dorset or went back to Leeds. I'll have to wait to do that though, as my son's off school now, so my times limited.

There are no Leslie H Oddys on 192.com but plenty of Leslie Oddys.

Hi

When you want to do some research on finding someone, how do you go abt finding someone (A lady) if she has married. Is there anyway around that one

Helen

Helen Report 10 Apr 2011 21:34

Just noticed Rose, that Vera was a widow when she died, so her husband must've died before her! I wonder how long before . .

Helen

Helen Report 10 Apr 2011 21:36

the solicitor didn't say anything about her will. The odd thing when I looked at 192.com was, under the address she was living at, appeared to be 4 people not related to each other, which makes me wonder whether it was a home of some sort.

Helen,

Why do you mention Dorset? Looks like Leslie's father died there.

Hi Rose

That's where Vera died, Dorset. Sorry, looks like I didn't mention that bit! whoops! :-)

Apparently her husband died suddenly of a heart attack when they were holidaying in Yugoslavia! Doubt we'd find his death certificate then.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your help with this. I think we've come to the end of the line on Vera now, thanks to you all xx

Just need to find out now whether or not we're legally entitled to her files, being the only surviving bloody relatives.

Thanks again! You've all been AMAZING! xx

Hope you get the file Helen.

Any idea where the name Geldart came from or why she chose it? Makes you wonder if she had another family she left.
