Nimrod Squelch.

Now, Ah Poo was clearly not of English stock.

But Harriet Poo of Huddersfield? Hm!

MsG -- my favourite stupid Ancestry trick.

Think of every four-letter word you can (and longer), and do a general census search.

Like this: %$#@* - where %$#@ is the word, with the asterisk at the end like that as a wildcard so you get all the fun variants.

Start with the biggle. There are some good 'uns.

I think %$#@nelf is my favourite.

There are even trees on Ancestry! Must be Pugh surely?

Although this one sounds like someone in a bad mood:

Janey - you are SUCH a bad influence.

Found that %$#@nelf one - but the image says Cracknell. Who on earth puts in a correction to show the wife's maiden name when it's so obviously wrong???

Oh my word - they get worse!! I'd not have thought of looking for that name and variants until tonight!!

I'm off to try a different one now!

Ackcherly, I complained to Ancestry once about a tree where all the names were obscene racial slurs. People seem to get a kick out of it.

I happened on it because I was searching for my famous (on GR) weird gr-grfather's sister's husband who had changed his name to McCock.

Try googling that without the filters on.

But here, this is too much.

I googled that favourite name of mine. F$#@nelf.

Fix the URL here.

http://www.ancestry.com/facts/F***nelf-family-history-uk.ashx

or

www.ancestry.co.uk/facts/F***nelf-places-origin.ashx

or

www.ancestry.co.uk/facts/F***nelf-emigration-au.ashx

Yeesh.

New things to say when you trip on the cat!

Oh, and have a look for Lemon Balls while you're there. I couldn't bring myself to correct it when I ran across him. ;)

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 5 Dec 2009 00:24

It won't let me look at those URLs - comes up "Bad Request" !!

I've been looking at the horrible word - which I can't put on here and can't give a clue to - but eeuugh.

And I know about your McCock lot as they cross over with my Mocock lot! My poor old grandad with a name like Arthur Mocock !!

Jill

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Dec 2009 00:25

Well you have to replace the *** in the urls with the real thing. ;)

Yes, Mococks masquerading as McCocks, they're all over, annoying people.

You mean Lemon Balls from Ball Lane in Essex on the 1901? I'm going to have to correct it - poor chap!

Sorted!
