London / middlesex...

I am just looking at what I think is a photo of a Lightermans' outing , my gt grandfather is on it, does anyone have any ideas of hills that might border the Thames...probably close to Chiswick area ....or maybe west or East of there but very close to river?

Could it be the Chilterns Rose.......I live in S. Herts. and the Chilterns are in the area, and we are 20 miles north of London.....?

Could be Sally, they would have gone by boat / s , there is part of a bridge visible in the photo but otherwise nothing to identify except quite a steep hillside behind.

They obviously went prepared as two of the gentlemen have a beer barrel complete with tap resting on their shoulders lol

Hi Carol, just got booted off by IE whilst looking at hills along the Thames lol. I did wonder about Richmond, as it would seem an obvious place... it is almost certainly not Greenwich , I think in any case they would have travelled West rather than east, simply because they travelled East more often down to Gravesend etc.

Is it looking south, possibly from around Shepperton or Sunbury-on-Thames towards the North Downs?

Other than that, if you were upriver, say towards Henley-on-Thames, if you faced North you'd be looking towards the Chilterns, as Moonchild said earlier.

No buildings at all unfortunately, I can only see the edge of the bridge ,ie not the river , it is brick built... and in fact looks rather more like a bridge over a railway track...but I don't think they would have been by the side of a railway...lol if only the photographer had been worse and taken the shot further to the left !

It has pictures of quite a few bridges on it (not just the London ones!) and a list of ALL the bridges on the Thames and when they were opened. According to the site, there are 106 bridges over the navigable stretch of the River Thames from Lechlade down to the QE 2 Bridge - happy hunting!

Just a thought Rose, the Chilterns also run alongside the Grand Union Canal.......could this have been a canal bridge......perhaps at West Drayton......?

If you are looking for a relaxing way to enjoy the river in Hounslow, then why not take a walk along the river Thames and take in some some spectacular views and scenery.
Strand on the Green in Chiswick is situated in a beautiful conservation area next to the river Thames. Riverside pubs and Grade II listed buildings sit side by side along the riverbank. it is also conveninetly located near

Thank you Ed and Elizabeth... found that site Ed and was eliminating some last night lol.. but i think Sally might be on to something ...the bridge looks to be narrow and more of a foot way than a main route...will be hunting later :)

Try googling for photos of bridges on the Grand Union......

Rose as Sally said check along the Grand Union Canal as it runs into the Thames and you used to get the lightermen on it around the Hanwell area

Thanks Uzzi, now you mention Hanwell it is a distinct possibility that they went up on canal, I have noticed it in relation to where some of mine lived. What I might do is try and get the photo on photo page and maybe someone with lightermen rellies might pick someone out.

Rose you also get the great western railway around the canal in that area either crossing it or running near it, that's if it's a railway bridge.

Uzzi the more I look at it the more I think it might be near a railway...from all the fencing,
