I hope that this is a (relatively) serious thread.

Being, now, on the other side of 50, who else, of our female friends, are experiencing flushes, and forgetful moments?

I know that with the oncome of the menopause, we can become forgetful.

Unfortunately, my mum suffers from Alzheimers, and I am now wondering if my forgetful moments are the change, or me being mum's daughter.?

I say that light heatedly, and do not mean to cause offence to any other, who has a family member, like my mum, who suffers from Dementia.

No offence taken Gail hun, daddy suffered with it. I have very forgetful moments with my underactive thyroid, it can be confused with dementia. xxx

My memory has been total rubbish for 10 years now. I'm 52 and went through the menopause at 42 (with no problems) so assume it is a menopausal thing.

If I don't write it down - I forget it.

Mind you, that does have its advantages sometimes!

Gail.................I am in exactly the same position as you, but Mum didn't realise she was getting things wrong or forgetting things, so I take comfort in that.

Hot flushes are rare for me, but lovely in the cold weather:))

We all forget things our whole lives, maybe we notice more as we get older as we are less busy with the family etc.

I had my 50th in May. But I have been suffering the flushes, for about 4 years.
I was told that the flushes can appear up to 3 years, before you actually begin the menopause!

It would seem, that we girls never know, whether we are coming, or going.

Hot flushes and more can last 10 years, started in my 30's. I used to take Evening Primrose Oil Capsules and somethingelse, did help ... got them in Holland and Barratt ...

The menopause comes in 3 trimesters like pregnancy ...

Hi LL, I've been over the menopause many years now, and still get hot flushes, hot summers are terrible and agonizing, last summer I had my head under a cold shower more times than not, although I must admit normally the flushes happen at night and I just have the sheet over me, can't stand the quilt, even during the cold weather. I think most people have forgetful moments. I used to know the names of over 100 plants and shrubs in my garden but at the moment I can't remember the names of the five perennials I bought last year.

Although my late Mum had Alzhiemers I'm not worrying, I think the more one worries about such things the more it's likely to happen, I just try to have many interests, keep upto date with what's going on arround me, read plenty of varying subjects, and trust in God that my GP will do as I have requested and if I get too far gone will not keep me alive with medication.

Hello Gail, I always thought you were about 38 from your posts lol!

Im 43 this year and do get forgetful at times, when tired., but its hard to tell if its hormonal or loads going on, my memory, has always been good though.

I hope things sort themselves for you,my nan too had alzheimers but my Mum and her siblings havent followed,

Forgetfulness is often a part of menopause, though not usually to the degree my friend suffered.

She went through a phase where she even forgot who she was, and one day found herself wondering around totally confused and forgot where she lived. It was very scary for her, and she really did think she had Alzhimers, so did her family.

However, some blood tests showed it was the menopause and HRT put things right. Now she's running a business!

I'm 50 this year, and have been going through menopause for the last few years, flushes and all, and so far have been able to get through without HRT....but I have been feeling rough lately and struggling to concentrate at work, making silly mistakes....so I'm wondering if I will have to give in and go to the doctors.

Things happen in stages, did read up on it once. I'm ahead of you all ....... yeyy, tis gone touch wood. Periods can cease, return, had that happen to me ... thought it was all over and it wasn't, carried on like that for quite a few years.

I do feel sorry for all you ladies, touch wood started the the menopause 5 years ago and haven't had any trouble whats so ever.

The menopause occurs in all women.

Menopause means the last menstrual period. Periods stop because the low levels of estrogen and progesterone do not stimulate the lining of the womb (endometrium) in the normal cycle. Perimenopause is the stage from the beginning of menopausal symptoms to the postmenopause.

Postmenopause is the time following the last period, and is usually defined as more than 12 months with no periods in someone with intact ovaries, or immediately following surgery if the ovaries have been removed.

Menopause - when?

The average age of the natural menopause is 51 years, but can occur much earlier or later. Menopause occurring before the age of 45 is called early menopause and before the age of 40 is premature menopause.
