the ex redundant one

the ex redundant one Report 7 Nov 2008 20:14

does any one know about this bug, my mum has been in hostpital for four weeks with it and is now clear. today they put two new patients next to her who had just come in with the bug. surely they should have moved her to the recovery bay before the new patients came in. if she gets it again i will put an official complaint in.

Bev Report 7 Nov 2008 20:28

the new patients, with the bug, should be isolated from all other patients

if that is not possible then notices put up so that all those with contact with the paient follow strict infection control procedures, ie wash hands before and after contact, wear gloves and aprons. all linen in special bags

Yes they should be in isolation but they dont have the rooms for it so they just leave it to "hope "

many time my friend had this and MRSA and people including nurses just got on with it ...often no gloves or single rooms or aprons ....I gave up worrying about it ............

Bl**dy awful attitude but they dont seem to care !!!

who doesnt care kemp???

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Nov 2008 20:43

My nan got MRSA whilst in hospital left in a normal ward with no isolation from other patients we had to ask for gloves and alcohol gel to be put near her bed for when we visited

The sister said she could of caught it anywhere maybe a bus, my brother pointed out she hadnt been on public transport for 5 years and didnt have it a month before when she was in hospital for a hernia operation. They didnt seem bothered no wonder its spreading like wildfire through hospitals.

I used to be a cleaner for the NHS and we had to scrub down isolation rooms for patients use different coloured cloths for each room etc

when i was in a few months the cleaner wiped the toilet basin and windowsills with the same cloth and used the mop and same water to wash toilets and ward.

I was paranoid about catching something.

Bev

Bev Report 7 Nov 2008 20:46

so blame the nurses then lorraine?

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Nov 2008 20:47

The staff on a whole are to blame someone is spreading this from patient to patient .

Jane

Jane Report 7 Nov 2008 20:48

OH says,if your mum gets ill again with it MAKE A COMPLAINT.She should not have been near peeps with it .

Bev

Bev Report 7 Nov 2008 20:50

patients do bring this in from the community

my hosp swabs every patient on admission, so we know if the bug was there BEFORE they came in

not all these bugs originate in hospitals, but we have to deal with what the public bring in, then get blamed for it

Bev

Bev Report 7 Nov 2008 20:52

and if that is the case lorraine

how come nurses families not all going down with these bugs?

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Nov 2008 20:53

I understand what you are saying bev and i have every respect for the nursing proffession my niece is a sister, but if a patient arrives in hospital without c diff or mrsa are you saying it is the patients visitors who give it to them.

Surely you must have seen how the hygiene in hospitals has deteriated since the hospitals put cleaning contracts out to private tender.

the ex redundant one Report 7 Nov 2008 21:07

the ward my mum is on is only for c diff as she caught it on another ward while taking three different antibiotics. i knew it was a possibility when she went into hostpital but thought she would be ok. she has been so ill and the drugs made her confused but now she is on the up and looking forward to coming home next wednesday. the ward is very clean being washed down every day and curtains changed, but as she is still on antbiotics for leg ulcers i am worried she will pick it up again so really hope they move her

Alyson.

Alyson. Report 7 Nov 2008 21:07

If it were my Mum i would ask for her to be removed from those patients straight away. Poor lady has had the bug once without being put at risk from catching it again.

My Dad died with MRSA and if i had known then what i know now things would have been done a lot different and maybe he would be still alive.

ACT NOW...

Linda G Report 7 Nov 2008 21:08

My Dad went into hospital with a broken leg and contracted MRSA....and died

He was put into a side room but no one told us why, we thought it was because he was restless at night and disturbed other patients. I never saw any staff that entered his room take any extra precautions

He was there for 4 days before a cleaner told us the reason why.

My god daughter is a nurse, and a very good one, but the nurses on that ward with the exemption of 2 were awful...sorry...but I hope I NEVER have to go there

lorraine

the hygiene in hospitals could be perfect you will still get the bugs

visitors sit on beds then get abusive when asked not to

they dont wash their hands before and after patient contact

the only private contract is for public areas ie the corridors and stairs, not the wards

all bays/rooms are deep cleaned if infection is known to have been present , after the patient is discharged, before it is used for any other patient

nurse wear new apron/gloves between patinet contact and wash hands.

new uniforms are worn each shift,

what more should we be doing?

Alyson.

Alyson. Report 7 Nov 2008 21:16

Bev.
You are lucky that those practices are adheared to in the hospital you work in but unfortunately a lot of our hospitals are filthy.

While my Dad was in the High Dependency unit there was blood on the floor beside his bed for 3 days and then it was only cleaned because i complained about it.

Bev

Bev Report 7 Nov 2008 21:16

do any of you know how demorilising this thread is to any nurses in here?

no wonder they are leaving the NHS in droves

i did have a word with junior doctor Alyson and they promised to move her, have just phoned my brother and told him to phone the ward and make sure they have done, hope mum realises that its for her good as it will mean being on her own again and she is going crazy with boredom as it is. they are not allowed tv or phones or radios or even their own night clothes as it is a isolation ward. even the paper trolley is not allowed round because it could transfer germs. my grandson is also a paitent at the hostpital with breathing problems he is five weeks old and i cannot see him because i am afraid i might carry germs
