LOL

It's a scientific paradox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger's_cat

http://www.phobe.com/s_cat/s_cat.html

I have puzzled over this and I think it means that common sense says the cat has to be either dead or alive but in the imaginary case it has to be considered as both at the same time.

Now my brain hurts and my own cat wants feeding so she is definitely 100% alive

Alrighty now. Cat conundrums.

------------------------------------------------

One can even set up quite ridiculous cases. A cat is penned up in a steel chamber, along with the following device (which must be secured against direct interference by the cat): in a Geiger counter there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small, that perhaps in the course of the hour one of the atoms decays, but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the counter tube discharges and through a relay releases a hammer which shatters a small flask of hydrocyanic acid. If one has left this entire system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives if meanwhile no atom has decayed. The psi-function of the entire system would express this by having in it the living and dead cat (pardon the expression) mixed or smeared out in equal parts.

It is typical of these cases that an indeterminacy originally restricted to the atomic domain becomes transformed into macroscopic indeterminacy, which can then be resolved by direct observation. That prevents us from so naively accepting as valid a "blurred model" for representing reality. In itself it would not embody anything unclear or contradictory. There is a difference between a shaky or out-of-focus photograph and a snapshot of clouds and fog banks.

------------------------------------------------

Let me say only that if anybody here had heretofore thought I was smart, I am about to disabuse you of that notion.

My answer to that is: a fish.

I'd just like to know *what* cases all that might be typical of ...

And just wanted to say hello to anyone on the early shift who might have been around while I was still sleeping, and return while I am sleeping again!

Snork. I went on vacation, is how it's put, I believe. ;)

Sometimes the world makes no sense, and that was one of those times.

Imagine if you posted a link to the song "Janey don't lose heart", and I took it as a personal insult, and pitched a little fit ... even though you and I had actually never had anything to do with each other before, and you're just a big Bruce Springsteen fan ...

Well, that's pretty much what happened to me! Transported. I felt just like ... McDuff the cat!

Hey, I guess *that's* what that allegory was all about. ;)

But McDuff really was guilty. Even he knew it.

Well hmm. I was just trying to post a post ...

I'll just put it here. Hello AnnGG, good to see you back!

Ophelia -- I love a puzzle! as long as it doesn't involve cats and quantum mechanics.

Dickler. Would that help?

There may still be some wondering about my name change. When I first posted on the board I was assigned a name -- it hadn't occurred to me that I had a "board name" automatically. I never wanted to use that name, but once I'd posted with it I felt stuck with it -- because I *don't* like name-changers. I got "confused" with someone else. Even when I embellished mine with an initial ... which turned out to be the same as hers. I added geography. It was unwieldy, and plain boring, and still amounted to using a name that I did not want to use on the internet and that the system failed to protect my privacy by assigning to me. So I changed. Permanently. Anybody who is ever confused can just ask, and anybody who knows may tell.

I did find that thread I was just trying to post in rather amusing, for reasons that will be obvious to pretty much everybody here.

The board name "Gall" is probably available, should anyone want it.

Hiya Gail!
