The obnoxious neighbour who used to live across the street had a cat named McDuff, an old and rather stupid, but wily, fellow. My friend next door had a cat named Sam. (When she moved back from Japan and rented the apartment under my office, I found a cat in the yard for her.)

She used to leave the door propped open for Sam to go in and out while she worked on her computer in the next room. Sam had many catnip toys, and often got feeds of catnip. McDuff had a nose for catnip.

Every day, she would look up to see McDuff standing in the doorway of the room she was working in.

WHY ARE YOU HERE, McDUFF? she would sternly inquire.

McDuff would clearly be overwhelmed by the existential depth of the question. He would stand dumbfounded, wondering ... Why am I here??

Then she would escort him out the door.

This is called an "allegory". I think. Maybe somebody else will understand it and let me know.

'allo you! Nice to see you back again. :-)

As for your cat post. I can honestly say my cat has never asked an existential question, nor been asked one. If he did get asked, he would just glare, and go back to sleep again.

TW, your cat is probably just faking. Ask him for Jean-Paul Sartre's recipe for omelette and he may surprise you.

hi 'Janey' ....the world IS mad...and I am the maddest one in it !

Don't know why we are here (in pursuit of 'making our souls'?) ....my brother often asks that question after having a glass of whiskey or two, I am waiting for him to find an answer because my 'big brother knows everything' lol

I am just here for love...... and one day I might find it ..... do ya think?

Hi ..J.C..the last time I `saw` you..(not literally..mind).

We were learning our periodic table!..
As for this cat post...I can only sumise there is a symbolic meaning to it...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Sep 2008 14:55

I think so too, Ophelia. Symbolic. I haven't quite figured out what it's symbolic of yet. Open to all suggestions!

Im thinking the ur cat analogy..has something to do with here on boards..I could be wrong mind...But `catnip`.. could be code for.. `threads`..lol...

Allegory, Ophelia. Must less dangerous than analogies. People who go to church might understand an allegory. Analogies, not so much.
