Shamed rock star Gary Glitter has been left in limbo after refusing to board a flight to the UK following his release from a Vietnamese prison.
The Foreign Office said Glitter declined to board the flight from Thailand to England and remained in transit, reportedly in a VIP area where travellers can rent small bedrooms airside at Bangkok airport.
In bizarre scenes after landing in Bangkok, Glitter refused to board a connecting flight to Heathrow and demanded to fly to Singapore after Thai officials refused to let him through passport control and into the country.
The 64-year-old, real name Paul Gadd, reportedly argued with Thai immigration officers, insisting he was a "free man", while British embassy officials tried to convince him to board the flight home and a British police officer who was supposed to be accompanying him home looked on.

Glitter then complained of fatigue and was taken to the VIP area.
It is not known when or where Glitter intends to travel to next, but it is unlikely he will remain in Thailand for any length of time after being told he would not be allowed out of Bangkok airport unless it was on an international flight.
Glitter left Vietnam and arrived in Bangkok after a 90-minute Thai Airways flight from Ho Chi Minh City.
He was released from prison after serving two years and nine months of a three-year sentence for abusing two girls aged 10 and 11.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The last information we have is that shortly before the flight to the UK departed he declined to board. We were last aware that he remained in transit.
"He decides where he applies to go and the country or authorities there will decide whether they permit him to enter their territory."

Not trying to minimise old GG's transgressions, but compare his case to the priest who recently got 5 years for abusing children....

Who? What was that? You might well ask. IMHO, a far worse case than GG. Involving gross breach of trust, defiling his position as a supposed good and kind person, using that position to carry out vile acts....but hardly any publicity. Is that strange? I wonder why...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7531118.stm

And of you search the BBC website for 'priest child abuse' you will be absolutely staggered at the response.

If not, you should be. I was.

Who does he think he is refusing to leave and although we don't want him back here, it makes me shudder to think what will happen if they do lose him, lock up your daughters 'world'

Sorry if this offends, but this man should be 'chemically seen to'

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 20 Aug 2008 11:47

Using that logic, we should stop our children going to church as well.

This is getting hysterical and out of control, isnt it.,

Jac Report 20 Aug 2008 11:51

Well I have to agree with Eldrick on this one.

OK Gary Glitter is one soiled person, but there are many many more of his ilk in this country who are still managing to conceal their vile acts.

At least GG is now a marked man (wherever he may end up) and I very much doubt after all this length of time that he has much of his money left in order to find a hidey-hole in the UK. I personally dont think that he is reluctant to return to the UK because of the publicity, I think it's because he cannot afford to live here, and hence his reasons for wanting to stay in the Far East.

Apparently this is the second flight to UK he has missed - what is he afraid of I wonder???? A plane full of British tourists returning home from holiday?

I dont agree with you Barbara, that's a terrible thing to sugest.

A blunt rusty knife would be better...dont you think?

Jac,

I don't believe it's financial problems at all. I think he wanted try to get to another country where he can try to slide into anonimity and carry on where he left off before he was arrested.

I agree with Eldrick that there must be hundreds/thousands of cases that we don't hear about but because of Gadd's previous life he will be in the spotlight. Perhaps that is influencing his reticence about returning to the UK.

I was trying to be nice Marion, sounds a bit gory your way lol

I think the problem here is that most Paedophiles are unknown to us before they are caught, but GG is a past celebrity and we have known about him a long time and he is bound to be caught up in the media attention and so of course we all despise him,
and no matter what your opinion of him is, even though he's a disgrace to this country, he is a free man and if another country will accept him then he could disappear and start his abuse again.

Jac

Jac Report 20 Aug 2008 12:12

SueM - I quite agree that he wants to live abroad so that he can carry on his vile acts - but not for the anonimity, purely from the financial point of view.

It cost so little to live there, compared with the UK, and quite frankly life is regarded as cheap in the Far East - as was shown very vividly the other day with the awful photographs of the baby in the gutter.

I still believe it's financial.

I'm with Sue on this, I dont' think its for financial reasons at all.

When (if) he arrives in the UK he will have to sign the Sex offenders register, which he will remain on for life. Police will monitor all his movements, he will not be allowed to own or use a computer. Basically he will not have any privacy for the rest of his life. He knows he will be recognised wherever he is and will be hounded wherever he goes. He will never have the luxury of anonymity that other paedophiles have.

In that light, I can understand why he doesn't want to come back here.

Jac

Jac Report 20 Aug 2008 12:36

He wont have anonimity no matter where he is, will he? And despite being on the Sex Offenders List in the UK he could still commit similar crimes here once again (despite the best offices of the police etc).

I just think that he spend a whole lot of his dosh before he was "uncovered" and since then his antics must have cost a bomb - therefore, not much cash left in the coffers - use what's left where it's cheaper to live.

He doesnt strike me as the sort of person that could live a life-style that he was used to in the UK without money, and what little he may have left could be eeked out in the Far East for far longer.

To be perfectly frank, I hope the begger stays in the Far East permanently - we as a country have better things to spend our money on than keeping the likes of him, and there are other paedophiles in the UK that need to be exposed and dealt with pdq.

Ian, do you know I was going to post almost the same thing as your first posting.

I'm certainly not taking Gadd's side, but I just wish EVERY person who's committed such a crime were as high-profiled by the authorities.
