I used to eat it WITHOUT sugar - but then I used to eat lemons like oranges!! Could not do it now, even as I write this my stomach is churning lol

Like Tina I never eat it with sugar,my grandfather grew a lovely "strawberry rhubarb" I also loved gooseberries straight off the bush.

Me amd my siblings always ate rhubarb with sugar, in the early Fifties sweets were rationed so this was a treat!

I also loved Goosegogs (berries) blackcurrants etc.straight out of the garden....and was forever picking 'food' from the hedgerows on the way back from school! ...just rubbed them on my sleeve lol...I never suffered a thing :O)

yes i did also like strawberrie with black pepper on

Hello everybody yes my brother and i use to go and pick rhubarb from fathers garden and dip in sugar,
also lettuce, strawberry's and cocoa with sugar this was in the late forties - fifties use to think it was lovely.
don't think i could eat lettuce with sugar now though.
Cocoa was messy end up with brown sticky fingers and choc round your mouth,
No wonder I'm a big girl all that sugar ha ha.

Rhubarb is a bit of an heirloom
Our rhubarb was given to me via my mum from a dear friend who passed away many years ago. I've had it in my garden for at least 20 years. He would have had it for the same time. dont eat it dipped in sugar any more, but when I cook it up, i usually end up eating too much.
Our family is divide into rhubarb lovers and haters, the youngest only likes it diluted with pears or apple

Back in the 50s there werent many sweets to be bought - and yes, we were given sticks of rhubard and a little bag of sugar.

Another "sweet" mum would give us was some chocolate powder mixed with sugar and put in a bag and we would dip into it like sherbert.

OH YEAH......... I have a picture of my sister and me (wearing only our knickers)
sitting on the veranda steps (1947) eating out rhubarb and out little bit of sugar dip.

I still love Rhubarb and don't need sugar on it any more.
I love it hot with lovely cold from the fridge

Oh what memories come flooding back reading this. I too used to eat rhubarb with sugar - and drinking chocolate with sugar mixed in a bag. Happy days !!

its a bit sad about missing the things you enjoy, I've missed a few things this year - , I'm supposed to being doing some research too. and that its all online is sooo distracting. My youngest is almost past going camping with me. I think that I'll get one more effort out of him (at xmaS) then I'm the lone camper

dont know if it was popular in the uk, but kids used to eat condensed milk sandwiches - yiiikkkk

Cocoa and sugar.. lick the finger and dip it in... loverly!

Fanny... yes we also had the occasional
condensed milk sandwich.
we loved that too.
We were in Germany just after the war and could not get cows milk, so we had Carnation milk ( diluted) in our tea and cocoa, and the condensed in puddings and on bread.
I suppose it was in an attempt to get us all topped up with CALCIUM.... we never complained anyway. ;-0)

mmmm yes.... don't think I could now though!!

I used to like goosegogs when they were turning yellow... they were sweeter then and not so sharp!

I don't like tomatoes with sugar on them... but hubby does. I like beef tomatoes with salt..... mmmmmmm

I was born in the 50's, too.

Used to eat goosegogs straight from the bush. Also remember getting the job of shelling peas - I eat more than went into the collender . dont think I have spelt that right !!!
Also picking parsley and chopping it up with a gadget my grandma had ready for parsley sauce - yummy - feeling hungry now - off to eat a stick of celery

We had 'goosegog' bushes in our garden when we were little.
Spent may happy days there.... my sister and I.
Had a cherry tree one time too... still one of my favourite fruits. What am I talking about? I love all fruits.. except the ones I don't yet know about. ;-0)

Mary... I loved shelling peas with my mum too.. and like you ate as many as we peeled. She never shouted at for it though.


Forgot to tell you.... my son (36) says celery is the food of the devil.
He can smell it in a stew.... so we have to leave it out for him.
He is not a fussy eater either.
