Just to balance things out you understand....

Can anyone who believes in psychic mediums explain a couple of things to me....please?

If these celebrity mediums truly have a 'gift' - is it morally right for them to charge £20 a head (or whatever it is) to do a stage show.....? Even the Pope doesnt charge for an audience - but then he doesn't relay messages from Great Aunt Mildred.

How come I can do just as good a reading as the mediums and I am not psychic? Even getting very specific things right about the person...very personal details that I couldn't possibly know....?

Why does a spirit never come right out and say 'This is Bartholemew Cholmondley here and the number of my secret bank account is ......' instead of....'Im getting a sense of someone....its J...James...John...can someone take him please....'

And theres millions more but these are the starters :-)

Please dont attack me personally, I am not attacking anyone else personally - but these are valid questions deserving of answers :-)

I'm with Eldrick on this - I think mediums are rubbish mostly - if they were so clever they would all be rich and not having to readings for a living!! At the same time however, I do think some people are gifted - but these people don't generally advertise the fact or make money from it - I have a friend who "sees" things before they occur - have witnessed it time and time again as did many of us who worked with her. Made me very uncomfortable.

I'd say cynical is an understatement where Eldrick and psychics are concerned lol

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 4 Jul 2008 00:19

lol

Totally cynical. I hear hundreds of anecdotes about 'the medium couldn't have known it - impossible'.

I have had that said to me many many times - 'how did you know that?'

Like when I do the card tricks and they find their card in their jacket pocket....'it must be magic' lol

But NO ONE can ever answer those questions I posed - never. I don't think they are unreasonable - after all, they are asking us to believe a pretty amazing claim - that they can communicate with the dead....so why not tell us the answers...?

Oh, absolutely. I totally agree, Rose.

As everyone has the right to disbelieve - and lay their case out for being a non - believer.

As long as it doesn't turn into a personal slagging match, there is no problem. Although there are plenty of people on these boards who are not capable of discussing anythng without getting into personal arguments!

This is a transcript of a Greek Doctor of Psychiatry who challenged Gordon Smith on live television.....it puts it into perspective for me....

'I dont want to ask you about what you do, how you do it, are there any tricks etc...but rather about the reason why you do it. You've mentioned several times that you dont benefit from this financially, only through your sales of your books which as an author of course you have every right to do so, but the argument that you maintain of doing this in order to ease human pain i feel is-to put it mildly- "heavy"(meaning over-the-top) in my perception.

Do you know why i say this? Because following the loss of a loved one, grief is natural and only becomes pathological when prolongued. Conversing with spirits prolongues, in the mind of a person not only in Scotland as the previous psychologist mentioned, but also here in Greece where people always have believed in the existence of ghosts and i refer you to Homer, what you do prolonges this idea they that have conjured in their minds and thus prolonges their pain.

I don't think that this lady's pain has been eased, perhaps only during that second, but it would have been wiser in such a case to undergo therapy which would aim to eliminate this pain from the source. We are all mortals, and will all eventually die.

There is no point in prolonging, or rather it goes against science and medicine to prolongue grief in the human mind. Indeed, if I may say so, it borders on unethical in terms of medical ethics. Because we psychiatrists are trying to do exactly the opposite, we are trying to eradicate grief not prolongue it."

Eldrick.....................

Dizzi may have a point................!!

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 4 Jul 2008 00:47

No, she hasn't got a point and I hope she meant it differently to the way I read it!

If it is meant to read that I go to see a professional medium, then I already have, several times.

I see nothing to commend their craft to me. I see plenty to indicate it is total fraud done by very amateurish cold reading and Barnum statement methods, which I think I am quite good at!
