noticed the cost of a french stick in Asda yesterday is up by 17p on a few months ago.

Think has gone up everywhere, my mum and dad said the other day they had noticed that their small shops were now the cost of what their big shop used to be.

Milkman has had to put cost of milk up to cover fuel etc as well

Lots of factors - poor harvests have led to shortages and increases in the cost of grain etc. for animal feed. Plus increase in fuel prices. Plus greater demand from developing economies like China. Plus more land being used to grow bio-fuel plants. etc....

Long as it's not just T that's put it up so much. I would change to somebody else if that was the case.

I remember years ago there was a potato shortage, chips went up to £1 a bag...they never brought it down again.

MarionfromScotland Report 8 May 2008 14:40

As you say,by the time you travel around it's not worth it.

Ladies, do you have a farmer's market or even a farm shop nearby? Failing that, is there a car boot sale with a veg stall?
We were getting a bag of local potatoes for £7 from the local garage - cheaper than the supermarkets and better for the environment as less fuel used!
I noticed someone at the boot sale selling fresh, free-range eggs for £2 per dozen - again that's well worth it as you know the eggs aren't from caged hens.
High fuel prices impact on everything. Our costs have doubled in last two years.

I don't shop at the farmer's market as it's in the middle of town one Saturday a month, and parking is horrendous.
However, our local garage sells local veg (and locally reared beef, pork and chicken) which is cheaper that the supermarkets and tastier also. Only thing is, you have to take whatever is in season so there's also a need for the supermarket at times.
I just hate how we're "held over a barrel" somehow by the big stores so this is my small act of rebellion!

Woody's Report 8 May 2008 15:26

Karen, he has my sympathies as it's difficult to continue to absorb costs.
I haven't bought meat from the supermarket since ages as I prefer the taste of the meat from a butcher and also it goes further! For instance, a pound of mince from the butcher has less fat added than the same weight from a supermarket! Also, a roast from the butcher doesn't have a big skelp of fat hidden under the meat!
I watch what I buy and I never use a credit card or a cheque book when I'm shopping. I withdraw the cash and use only that amount - that way I don't overspend as I can't afford to!
That way, I have money to spend on my hobby!!

Woody..you're so right. we've had so many people come in lately who now wont shop at a supermarket because of the reasons you say......plus you get great service,
