What Roman Toilets Were Like
Roman toilets were a row of seats with a channel of water in front. Instead of toilet paper, the Romans used a wooden stick with a sponge on the end. After use, they would dip the sponge stick in the channel of water. The same sponge stick would then be used again and again for different people. Rich Roman ladies disliked the idea of a sponge stick and used an ostrich feather instead. The rich Roman's homes had their own private toilets. At the other end of the scale there were the poor, who would share one toilet between many families. To help with drainage, their houses were built over rivers or sewers.

Hi, I have some chickens I keep in the garden and their hen food has risen in price by 49% since January. Think it's something to do with last year's soggy summer and poor grain harvests. So if I sold my chooks' eggs, they would have to go up by that much, too.

I agree all supermarket prices have really risen.

thank goodness for our allotment most of veg comes from there so that saves a bit.

Our milkman informed me that our milk went up by 4pence a pint and we only have four pints a week now as its just the two of us,but at least its fresh on the door step Mon/Wed/Fri.Jean

Id rather pay the extra know that its coming and not worry about running out as cant always get to the shops and at least we are helpig to keep someone in emplyment

I used to get mine delivered,when my kids were young,not now though.
I remember the bottles been frozen sometimes or the silver top ripped open by the bird's in winter.

Yes I have noticed that the prices have risen, and when I take MiL on a Tuesday her bill has risen by £4...... part of it is due to the price of petrol/diesel and the alterations that have come into force on the large delivery vehicles......they are passing some of the costs on in the goods being transported....

I well remember having Dad up from Cornwall, he nearly had a fit when he saw the prices for vegetables.....they were so cheap where he was......

No wonder people get into debt, must be really hard trying to manage on a very low income.

I must admit,I dont pay much attention to some of the thing's I buy ie fruit and veg, I just chuck it in the trolly,as that is a must to me.

O.h. had a fit today as the gas and electric suppliers want to up his monthly direct debits by huge amounts. Last quarter's bill he was in credit and now he is owing them money. He says he won't pay as much as they ask but will up it a little, in the meantime, he moaned about me being on here at night for hours with a light on!
He won't install central heating as he doesn't like it and he doesn't need it, he is rarely cold! I sit here in winter with a fleece jacket on and a blanket round my legs sometimes! Only a gas fire in the lounge and as it has open plan stairs at the side a little heat goes up there. He therefore uses an immersion heater so I suppose he will moan about that now and cut down the times it comes on. Good thing when he finishes installing the shower in the bathroom so I can use that, might work out a bit cheaper.
Not sure if I will be able to manage on my pension if/when I move back to my bigger house with central heating (when it is fixed), might have to take in a lodger lol

Light some candles, wear a hat as well as your fleece and have a hotwater bottle.Ask OH to take a photo of you cause you want to post it on Gr to let us all see....that should give him something to think about lol.

Oh Liz, I have just read your posting and as you know due to bereavement I have not slept well for a couple of years and the gas fire goes on in the early hours, and the telly, and the lights, and the kettle.....

I am dreading the gas bill dropping through the letterbox, although OH will not say anything too much....

......and Marion, I am like you and up to recently have put stuff in my trolley without thinking, but this morning when I visit Tesco I am going to check and compare prices more.......I have noticed the bill getting larger, but I have been buying different things the last few weeks....

Hi Sally, hon, you don't go on any more than some of us especially me lol
I am sure your o.h. will be understanding about the costs and you need to be comfortable. The set up here is so unbalanced...
If things get so difficult you will have to just wear a big sweater over everything so the gas fire isn't on so long, and use one light instead of two or something, doesn't mean you can't still come down for your cuppa and company when you can't sleep, my love.
And if you can economise on the shopping a bit it will balance it out anyway lol
